As a huge fan, I’d like to share my thoughts on Jack O’Connell discussing the creation of Remmick, the leading vampire in the movie “Sinners,” directed by the talented Ryan Coogler. O’Connell delves into Remmick’s backstory and the reasons why the horror film avoids excessive focus on it. Set in the Mississippi Delta during the 1920s, this period horror follows a duo of gangsters seeking to establish their dream business in their hometown, but they soon find themselves confronting bloodthirsty creatures instead. The impressive cast of “Sinners” includes Michael B Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Kaye Lawson, and Li Jun Li.
In the ongoing success of the movie “Sinners”, Michael B. Jordan’s co-star Daniel O’Connell recently shared some insights about the film’s unexplored backstory during an interview with Gamesradar+. O’Connell revealed that Jordan (the director Ryan Coogler) was open about his character Remmick’s history and that they had numerous discussions regarding it. Despite these conversations, O’Connell expressed his amazement at how Coogler managed to distill Remmick’s origin into the film’s runtime, commending the director’s commitment. For a more detailed account of O’Connell’s thoughts, check out the interview below:
One thing I really appreciate about Ryan is his ability to answer any question related to the story or characters, even if he doesn’t know the answer right away. He makes sure to find one by the end of the day, often collaborating with you in the process. His curiosity is boundless as he delves into every detail with you. Considering Remmick has a heritage spanning 600-700 years due to being a vampire, and as long as certain rules are followed, he lives forever. Figuring out how to condense that rich history into just two hours of cinema or performance is a mystery to me, which is why having someone like Coogler, who shares your curiosity, is invaluable.
What O’Connell’s Response Reveals About Remmick’s Past
Historical Insight Adds To The Tragedy That The Movie Hints Towards
The film “Sinners” doesn’t primarily revolve around Remmick, but it subtly provides clues about his past. His consistent Southern accent contrasts with occasional Irish accents and his own musical abilities, suggesting that he is actually of Irish descent, possibly from the 1200s. This, combined with O’Connell’s quote, implies a backstory where Remmick’s family may have experienced hardship during the Christian expansion into Ireland, which was prompted by Pope Adrian IV’s approval of English military campaigns in the country.
In the unfortunate event of losing his home and family to invaders, Remmick was eventually transformed into a vampire. With this new existence, he envisioned himself as a healer, striving to establish a unified community with his followers, away from the discord that plagued humanity. However, it seems his aspirations were thwarted, as he found himself isolated in America amidst waves of Irish immigrants from the 1560s onwards. This solitude eventually led him to Joan (Lola Kirke) and Bert’s (Peter Dreimanis) doorstep, and later, he heard Sammie’s (Caton) music.
Our Thoughts On Sinner’s Unspoken Backstories
The Movie Leaves Viewers Hungry For More
One of the strengths of the movie “Sinners” lies in its immersive world-building, seamlessly integrating necessary details about Coogler’s vampires and the time period into character dialogues without explicit explanations. This approach makes the film easy to understand for viewers while also developing complex characters that seem authentic. Although Coogler has not yet announced plans for “Sinners” spin-offs, the audience’s eagerness to learn more is a clear reflection of his skillful writing.
