Reneé Rapp Seemingly Disses ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ in New Single “Leave Me Alone”

Reneé Rapp is seemingly dissing her old job in her newly-released single “Leave Me Alone.”

As a devoted fan, I noticed that the actress who brought Leighton Murray to life in HBO’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls” seemed to subtly critique the show through one of her new song’s lyrics, released just yesterday.

In the second verse, Rapp sings, “I brought my romantic relationships along with me, but now the performance seems incomplete.” Alternatively, he could be saying, “I took my intimate experiences with me, which makes the performance seem lacking.” Either way, the revised version maintains the essence of the original lyrics while being more easily understood and less offensive.

The Hollywood Reporter contacted representatives from HBO Max and Rapp regarding a potential reference to their show in one of her lyrics, since she hasn’t explicitly confirmed this connection yet.

After the launch of her debut album “Snow Angel” in 2023, it’s her initial comeback with a new single. Her second album, titled “BITE ME”, will follow suit and be released on August 1st.

Initially appearing as Leighton on “The Sex Lives of College Girls” during its first season in 2021, it became known that Rapp would be parting ways with the show by season three, which aired in the previous year. In a February 2024 THR cover story, when asked about her departure, Rapp, who is also recognized for her role in the “Mean Girls” movie musical, expressed that her decision to leave was challenging for various reasons. She reminisced about the tough process of accepting her own sexuality while simultaneously navigating similar struggles for her character within the series.

That [show] was remarkably similar to my own life, and during that particular coming-out scene, I didn’t feel like I was acting at all. Not in the slightest,” she remarked back then. “I was simply crying. When I watch it now, I don’t see a character; instead, I see myself.

In the initial two episodes of the third season, Rapp’s character, Leighton, was introduced. Later, due to MIT’s robust mathematics program, which aligns with her aspiring career in finance, she chose to switch schools from Essex College.

The popular TV show titled “The Sex Lives of College Girls“, featuring Amrit Kaur as Bela, Pauline Chalamet as Kimberly, and Alyah Chanelle Scott as Whitney, was unfortunately terminated after completing its third season earlier this year.
