Renée Zellweger Joins ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Cast for Season 5

Renée Zellweger is set to visit the Arconia and join the cast of Only Murders in the Building.

The news that the actress has been cast was shared via the series’ social media platforms on Wednesday, mimicking the style used in the announcements for Avengers: Doomsday. They even placed her name on a director’s chair as a playful nod.

The specifics about Zellweger’s part in the show are still undisclosed, but she is set to appear alongside series leads Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Earlier announcements have included Christoph Waltz and Keegan-Michael Key as new cast members for season five.

Just like its past seasons, the fifth season of the Emmy-winning show will comprise ten episodes. At present, this season is being actively produced.

As a gamer, I’d say: “Season 4 was a game-changer for me with an all-star lineup joining Martin, Short, and Gomez! Meryl Streep reprised her role as Loretta Durkin, Jane Lynch stepped in as Sazz Pataki, and we welcomed heavyweights like Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, Richard Kind, Melissa McCarthy, Kumail Nanjiani, and Molly Shannon to the cast!

Season 5 of the show is released following its victories at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. The Hulu production bagged the accolade for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series’, while Short was honored as the ‘Best Actor in a Comedy Series’ for his character on the program.

During the event, Short and Martin were both unable to attend, which led Gomez to joke onstage that they weren’t present because they didn’t show interest. However, in an interview with Amy Poehler on her podcast, “Good Hang with Amy Poehler”, Short revealed that he couldn’t make it due to contracting COVID-19 following the SNL 50th anniversary special a few days earlier.

In a podcast discussion, Short expressed his frustration by saying, “I never win!”, adding that he wasn’t even paying attention as he was engrossed in watching ‘The Brutalist’. However, someone urged him to turn it on, and he was taken aback. This is similar to what Selena Gomez stated: “We always lose.

Regarding the popular series “Only Murders in the Building” as we embark on season five, the actor mentioned that the idea of receiving awards for the show had never crossed his mind. He casually dismissed the notion, stating that he would always expect other actors like Jeremy Allen White or Jason Segel to be recognized instead. The publicist often shared predictions about award ceremonies, and he was consistently surprised to find himself not on the list.

When Poehler inquired from Short about his winning strategy, he quipped, “I suppose it’s because I’m cherished. I’ve turned into a rather foolish emblem.

Deadline was first to report the news of Zellweger’s casting.
