In simple terms, it’s worth noting that Capcom recently disclosed its earnings report for the third quarter of their fiscal year 2025. This report underscores the fact that their classic survival horror series, Resident Evil, remains a dominant force, with sales exceeding 170 million units worldwide. The most recent version, Resident Evil 4 Remake, has been particularly successful, selling more than 9 million copies in the previous year alone.
The Resident Evil series continues to be Capcom’s most successful game franchise, with the Monster Hunter series coming in second place, having sold a combined total of 120 million units. Interestingly, Monster Hunter Rise (or Wilds) has already passed the 10 million mark since its release, indicating it may surpass the record of Monster Hunter: World’s sales of 24 million copies.
As per the financial report, it’s clear that Resident Evil 2 has been the most successful title in the series so far, having sold a total of 15.7 million units since its launch. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard comes in second with 14.7 million units sold, and both Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 follow closely behind with approximately 9.9 million units each. This data also highlights that discounts offered on digital platforms like Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Store have a significant impact on sales of older games in the series.
In this report, Capcom didn’t unveil specific plans for the future of the Resident Evil series, but they did highlight a proactive approach, planning to release both new and familiar intellectual properties to cater to both consumers and investors. Some titles that are expected soon include Onimusha: Way of the Sword, scheduled for release next year, and possibly an expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel the anticipation building about Resident Evil 9. Although the specifics are being kept under lock and key, whispers from within the gaming community hint at a potential change in direction for this iconic franchise. Some insiders are even suggesting that beloved characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and Chris Redfield might make a comeback, which would certainly stir up excitement among fans like myself.
2021 has undeniably been my favorite year so far with Capcom, as it continues a remarkable 12-year streak of growth. With powerhouse series such as Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Dragon’s Dogma, and Monster Hunter, their projected sales for the upcoming first quarter of the next fiscal year are an impressive 8 million units. It seems that Capcom’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down in the near future.
