Returnal Developers Reveal Saros, Promising Peak Gameplay

Housemarque Studios, creators of Returnal, have unveiled a new project titled Saros. This upcoming game is set to launch in 2026 and promises an advancement in the gameplay mechanics showcased in the 2021 third-person shooter roguelike, which was also developed by them.

At the end of the February 12 State of Play broadcast, Housemarque unveiled a chilling trailer hinting that their upcoming project takes place in a different universe compared to Returnal, yet shares similar gameplay dynamics.

In 2021, the intriguing game called Returnal captivated players, especially given its development by an under-the-radar studio. Its enticing and meticulously crafted bullet-hell gameplay, coupled with precise controls, a compelling roguelike design that kept players hooked, and a haunting, enigmatic storyline made it one of the top titles for PlayStation 5.

Much like the game Returnal, Saros also incorporates a death loop, which is common in roguelikes. However, unlike most of its genre, each improvement in Saros will reportedly be permanent, as mentioned by Creative Director Gregory Louden in a blog post on the PlayStation website.

In the game Returnal, only a few changes persisted with Selene, the main character, throughout her journeys. None of these alterations affected the weapons she was carrying. Conversely, in Saros, the protagonist will have the ability to permanently enhance their weaponry, allowing them, as the game’s title implies, to “return stronger.

Regarding the tale, in Saros, you’ll command Arjun Devraj – a formidable Soltari Enforcer known for his relentless pursuit of those he seeks.

The developers appear especially eager to reveal their work-in-progress to enthusiasts. According to Louden, this game represents a cherished dream project and the pinnacle of Housemarque’s gameplay-focused gaming experience.

Later this year, Housemarque plans to unveil an extensive gameplay trailer without specifying the exact release date for its debut.

2026 will see the debut of Saros on the PlayStation 5. For those proud owners of a PS5 Pro, the developers have assured us that its release will include optimizations specifically tailored to maximize the console’s capabilities.
