On Sunday evening, the 16th season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” kicked off with an unexpectedly ordinary premiere, considering the backstage turmoil that has affected the reality show in the past year. However, apart from a lengthy introduction introducing most of the new cast members to the group, things seemed relatively normal.
Peaches Are Back: Porsha Williams, Cynthia Bailey Rejoin the Series” – This episode marks the comeback of Porsha Williams and Cynthia Bailey following extended absences from the show. However, only Porsha has a peach in the opening sequence, alongside returning cast member Drew Sidora and Shamea Morton, who’s been a friend of the series for some time now and has recently been promoted to the main cast.
Morton plays a pivotal role linking the original Real Housewives cast with the latest additions – Brit Eady, Angela Oakley, and Kelli Ferrell. Almost immediately, the newcomers stir up drama, frequently questioning why Williams, who recently divorced Simon Guobadia after only 15 months of marriage, allegedly took her ex-spouse away from Falynn Pina. During season 13 of Bravo’s reality show, Falynn was a cast member while still married to the Nigerian entrepreneur.
Throughout the episode, Morton’s party at her Atlanta mansion becomes the stage for further probing questions from the guests. During this soiree, Williams and Kenya Moore, who has been conspicuously absent from the season’s promotional photos, make their entrance to the show’s new team. As the ladies chat about marital status (Eady, Morton, and Oakley are married while Williams, Moore, Sidora, and Ferrell are going through divorces), Kenya inquires about Eady’s relationship status, given that she only sports a single ring without a wedding band.
When Eady, who used to model, explains to Moore that the ring is an improvement over the initial one her husband Michael Cunningham presented, she replies in a puzzled tone, “I guess it’s another anniversary for the first ring.” Later on, during a private discussion with Ferrell and her spouse, Eady states, “You two are going through a divorce, and I’m married. Why do you care about my wedding ring? Can’t you see this is just a ring? It’s no cause for concern.
Even though the women’s conversation in the episode has concluded, viewers are aware that more developments are on the horizon because Moore was ultimately let go from RHOA last June following her display of explicit posters of Eady at the grand opening of her Kenya Moore Hair Spa in Atlanta during filming of the current season. Moore initially denied allegations of revenge porn when these images were circulated on social media, but later admitted to her mistake during an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show last November, stating, “Looking back, I wish I could do it all over again. I now believe that those photos were highly inappropriate and escalated the situation.
It’s uncertain if Bravo will broadcast the incident resulting in Moore’s departure, but if they do, it may bring clarity to conflicting accounts about the aftermath. Moore asserted she was safeguarding herself and her daughter Brooklyn from threats made by Eady. However, at the time of the occurrence, a production insider informed Page Six that neither Kenya nor any weapons were ever threatened during the production process. Another source suggested Eady made verbal threats that left cast members feeling uneasy.
In this season’s premiere episode, many interactions were awkward, including those involving Sidora and her relationship with Dennis McKinley, father of Pilar Jhena Williams. Although Sidora claims that McKinley is only aiding her in creating new music, she has referred to him as her primary support during her divorce from Ralph Pittman. This, coupled with her not inviting Williams to an alleged surprise birthday party that McKinkey attended, has caused suspicion among the group, particularly Williams and Morton, who directly ask Sidora at the end of the episode: “Are you dating Dennis now?
It remains unclear how Sidora will respond and what Phaedra Parks’ return to the show, announced earlier, will look like, following her departure in 2017. As of now, there’s been no word on Kandi Burruss, who stepped down from the series last March. Burrus expressed optimism to THR, believing that the series can continue successfully despite the numerous cast changes it has experienced recently.
Burruss expressed that he believes the show doesn’t necessarily have to conclude. He thinks it has a potential to carry on, possibly for an indefinite period, as there’s always an audience. While it might not be the same group of fans, some may drop off, he noted. However, he shared examples from the past when people thought the show would struggle without certain cast members like Kim Zolciak and Nene Leakes, but the ratings surprisingly improved instead.
It remains to be seen if the current path will continue after Moore leaves, somewhere during this particular season.
RHOA airs new episodes Sundays at 8 p.m. on Bravo, streaming next day on Peacock.
