Today marks their 2nd anniversary, and to commemorate this special day, we’re reminiscing about Mirzapur actor Ali Fazal’s quirky yet endearing proposal when he didn’t traditionally get down on one knee to ask for his wife’s hand in marriage.
In 2020, Richa Chadha shared details about her surprise proposal during an interview with Bride’s Today. She explained that her partner, Ali Fazal from Mirzapur, arranged a romantic dinner on a private island in the Maldives for what she believed was her birthday celebration. However, it turned out to be the moment when Ali popped the question instead.
In an unexpected manner, Ali put forth his question. He explained, “We had just finished dinner and were enjoying champagne when, being his usual impulsive self, Ali proposed to me. Instead of getting down on one knee or presenting a ring, he did so casually. Later, he even took a 10-minute nap on the sand – I suspect he was perhaps stressed about the proposal!
During that same interview, Richa openly shared that she was the one who first expressed her feelings towards Fazal. She remembered watching the 1992 biographical comedy movie, Chaplin, at home. She mentioned how delighted she was to discover a shared interest in movies with her now-husband.
She disclosed that at that moment, she told him, “This is so sweet, I truly care for you.” Yet, it was after three months that Fazal reciprocated with his own declaration of love by saying those three special words to the actress.
In the course of their talk, Ali confessed that it was indeed Richa’s clumsiness that won his heart. He explained that whenever Richa ate, food would often spill and cutlery would inevitably slip. Moreover, he recalled one particularly embarrassing incident involving Richa when she was in Venice, as the actress from Heeramandi.
At an elegant dinner gathering, the actor disclosed that Judi Dench was seated at an adjacent table. A stray bean unexpectedly soared from Richa’s dish towards her. Richa playfully referred to this incident as her “moment reminiscent of Pretty Woman.
On October 4th, 2022, Ali and Richa tied the knot, and they were blessed with their first daughter on July 16th, 2024.
