As someone who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, Richard Simmons was more than just a fitness icon for me; he was a part of my childhood. His energetic presence and catchy workout routines were an integral part of my physical education growing up. I still remember the excitement of putting on my headphones and following along with Sweatin’ to the Oldies, feeling like I was a part of something bigger than myself.
Richard Simmons, known for his vibrant presence in the fitness community, passed away at the age of 76, leaving many of us who grew up with his motivational exercises feeling a great sense of loss. Despite being less visible in recent years, Simmons remained active on social media and left a poignant message for his followers prior to his passing. His team revealed a scheduled tweet from July 14th that has touched my heart deeply.
On July 14, only a day after celebrating his 76th birthday, the unfortunate news of Richard Simmons’ passing emerged. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation, with authorities expressing initial doubts about foul play. Since then, Lenny, Richard’s brother, and other team members have kept in touch with fans, sharing a profoundly moving message that Richard had intended to post on social media (X, like Twitter) on July 14.
Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” might have been mentioned in relation to Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum’s movie of the same name, which premiered on July 12 – Richard Simmons’ birthday. However, since Simmons isn’t here to enjoy this connection, the significance of these lyrics has taken on a deeper meaning.
Richard Simmons’ team explained how this posthumous message came to be, writing:
Greetings all, I’m pleased to share that Richard put in a great deal of effort into crafting his posts. He was brimming with ideas and would work diligently on each one, making adjustments until he was satisfied before hitting the “post” button. On weekends, he’d opt for sharing a photo with an accompanying caption. By Friday, he had already selected his weekend photos and written their captions in advance. Therefore, we present to you the post Richard intended to publish last Sunday – we believed you’d appreciate it.
Many fans expressed their gratitude for one last message from Richard Simmons before his passing, which seemed particularly appropriate given the suddenness of his death. He had recently taken to social media to thank everyone for their birthday greetings.
I’m blown away… I’ve received more birthday messages than ever before! Sending out responses one by one right now. Wishing you an absolutely stunning end to your week. With love, Rich.
Approximately 23 hours after the event, around 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning, a housekeeper made an emergency call to the authorities from Richard Simmons’ residence. Fire and law enforcement personnel were promptly dispatched, and unfortunately, upon their arrival, Simmons was declared deceased.
Based on the information given, it seems that this individual has had some health concerns in the past few years. In 2017, he was hospitalized for what was reportedly severe indigestion, but the details of his condition were not disclosed to the public. More recently, in March of this year, he created a scare among his followers when he announced that he had skin cancer. However, he later clarified that he had been diagnosed with it “so many years ago.”
Growing up with “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” being a significant part of my physical education in school, I’m dismayed that this beloved fitness icon has left us. At TopMob, we sympathize with Richard Simmons’ loved ones and fans during this difficult time. Here is a message of comfort from him.
