Rick Caruso Tells Bill Maher He Predicted Palisades Fire: “I’m So Sad That I Was Right”

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel deeply affected by the destructive LA wildfires. I believe our leaders could have done more to prevent such disasters, and here’s why…

On the debut episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, season 23, I found myself as a guest, and Bill posed an intriguing question: if I were in charge, how would I have managed the recent wildfires differently?

Caruso explained that being aware of approaching fires is crucial, especially during fire season. For instance, there was a fire in Malibu just three weeks ago, and six years back, a fire occurred in Brentwood. If you’re not familiar with the Brentwood area, it’s only 15 minutes from where the Palisades Fire took place. Over four decades have passed since vegetation grew there, and if that fire spreads, it could easily reach the Palisades and cause significant damage.

He went on to say, ‘I’m regrettably correct,’ he remarked. ‘It was foreseeable, Bill. And what can be foreseen can often be avoided.’

He added, “Furthermore, it’s alarming that our primary water storage is offline during the busiest wildfire season. I’d call that a serious oversight, and we need to delve into the reasons behind this. After all, managing this city is like running a business for its citizens. The question everyone should be asking is, ‘Given the warnings about the impending storm or high winds, why weren’t preventative measures taken?’

The fires that started in Pacific Palisades on January 7th, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, spread throughout Los Angeles County, causing further blazes. Despite first responders working tirelessly around the clock to control the flames, over 12,000 homes, buildings, and structures were devastated along the fires’ paths. At least 25 lives were tragically lost in these events.

Bill Maher went ahead and posed the question about Caruso’s viewpoint on guiding Los Angeles through its restoration and reconstruction process.

In regards to actions we should take within the city and immediate steps to take now, he suggested an option: burying power lines underground. However, when discussions about rebuilding arise, it’s crucial that we act swiftly to help people return home, but we must also exercise caution because areas like the Palisades, similar to Altadena, will continue to be at risk of fires. So, let’s avoid simply rebuilding the same structures.

Later on, Caruso, the proprietor of Palisades Village, elaborated on how his shopping complex managed to endure the fiery disaster. Previously, it had been mentioned that this entrepreneur had enlisted the services of private firefighters to safeguard it.

He mentioned that our construction approach was unique. The entire settlement we constructed lacks any flammable substances. Given that we were aware of the fire-prone location, we meticulously planned and designed it to be exceptionally resilient.

Maher brought up a point to Caruso, asking whether it’s reasonable to employ private firefighters since not everyone has the means to pay for a private fire department.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Absolutely, having our home team present did allow the L.A. Fire Department to focus on other urgent matters. However, imagine if our fire department was always fully staffed and well-resourced, we wouldn’t even need private services.

Caruso pointed out, “The criticism that Caruso shouldn’t have preserved his downtown area. But consider this: eight homes were safeguarded. Plus, all the shops and eateries are intact. This means hundreds of jobs were kept. We’re preparing to reopen it. Businesses will resume operation. What’s not being discussed is the impact on thousands of people who lost their jobs, those with no safety net – gardeners, pool cleaners, service workers, delivery personnel, waitstaff, chefs. Everyone who has a business within our village will soon have their job back. This is right, and we must find ways to aid those in direst need, as there are many out there.

During his chat with Maher, Caruso mentioned that although his home in Palisades remained unscathed, unfortunately, his daughter’s residence had been destroyed by the fires.

The other guests featured on the latest episode of Real Time were Larry Wilmore and Erin Perrine.
