Ridley Scott Already Has Plans for Gladiator 3

As a movie critic with over three decades of watching gladiators clash and emperors fall, I must say that I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott‘s epic masterpiece, Gladiator. The original film is a timeless classic that has left an indelible mark on cinema history, and I have been eagerly awaiting the return of Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius to the big screen.

It’s been more than two decades since he started working on his sequel to “Gladiator,” but it seems he won’t have to wait as long for another trip to the Coliseum. In an interview with Première, Scott hinted that ideas for “Gladiator 3” are already brewing, though its realization will largely hinge on how the upcoming film fares in November.

The sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II,” continues the narrative of Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, as we follow his son, Lucius, navigating intricate power struggles among emperors, slaves, and gladiators within the grandeur of ancient Rome. It appears that Scott has been contemplating the movie’s potential for a third installment, as he has already been “mulling over” ideas for it. He shared:

With that thought in mind, I’ve been contemplating the possibility of Gladiator 3. Yes, you heard it right! The concept has ignited my imagination… The conclusion of Gladiator II bears resemblance to The Godfather, as Michael Corleone finds himself in a position he never sought and ponders, ‘Now, Father, what do I do?’ So the upcoming film will revolve around a character who is reluctant about his current circumstances.

It appears that Scott has become quite enthusiastic about this concept, and he’s already chatted about it with Paul Mescal, the actor who portrays Lucius in Gladiator II. In a different interview, Mescal revealed that the director had indeed shared his vision for where the series could progress next. He stated:

Absolutely! Ridley did discuss that matter with me just yesterday. I’m keeping an eye on the situation and definitely intrigued by it. However, let’s not act too hastily; we need to make sure all pieces fit well in the puzzle.

Gladiator II is a Historical Epic…Not an Epic Fantasy

Scott has been eager for quite some time to delve back into the gritty and perilous realm of the Roman Empire, aiming for the film to be nothing short of flawless. He’s particular about portraying it as a historically accurate movie, rather than something more fantastical. During an interview with Total Film, Scott emphasized that contrary to some beliefs, ‘Gladiator II’ is deeply rooted in genuine history. He stated:

As a film enthusiast, I found myself repeatedly drawn to this story – a tale steeped in history. My mission was not to create a fantastical world, but rather, to breathe life back into the past, making it tangible and real for modern audiences.

It remains uncertain as to which cinemas Gladiator II will debut in, given its upcoming release. The movie doesn’t have a modest budget, so expectations are high for it to outperform Scott’s previous film, Napoleon, which initially underperformed at the box office but eventually thrived on Apple TV. The enduring popularity of Gladiator, combined with Denzel Washington’s star power, should attract viewers to theaters. However, there are numerous other major films set for release around the same time, including the adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked. In essence, it will be a tough fight for audiences at the box office.

Gladiator II
is released on November 22.
