As a long-time fan of Denzel Washington’s incredible acting prowess and captivating performances, I am absolutely thrilled about his role in “Gladiator II.” The character of Macrinus, based on a historical figure with shades of a modern-day politician, promises to be a riveting portrayal that will undoubtedly leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
In the sequel titled “Gladiator II“, Denzel Washington takes on the role of a charismatic arms dealer, once a gladiator himself, who orchestrates a plan to seize power over Rome.
Character Macrinus shares similarities with a contemporary political figure, according to director Ridley Scott, although he is based on a real historical figure.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott revealed details about Macrinus’ past. “Macrinus was once held captive as a prisoner of war, likely in a North African nation. Upon arrival in Rome, he was most likely forced to fight as a gladiator. Miraculously, he managed to escape and found success in the business world, selling goods such as food, oil, wine, cloth, weapons, and more to the Roman armies. His empire extended across much of Europe with an estimated million men under his control. Given his wealth, which made him a billionaire during that time, it’s not surprising that he might have harbored ambitions for the throne. In fact, he often asked himself, ‘Why not me?’ He was also a cunning gangster, known to stir up chaos from which he could profit.
Previously, Washington expressed his view on this individual by stating, “He manipulates everyone around him, even his own family. He’s depleted his compassion, leaving nothing but emptiness within. He’s allied with the very embodiment of evil.
The 70-year-old actor, who’s been garnering attention with his standout performance that’s sparked Oscar discussions, previously caused a stir by revealing that a same-sex kiss scene in the movie was cut (the initial version of the film was approximately four hours long, as stated by Scott). However, Scott subsequently explained that the kiss was enacted during rehearsals but not filmed, while Washington later clarified it was more like a quick, casual peck and the fuss over the incident was “much ado about nothing.
In a recent interview, Denzel Washington admitted that he’s been abstaining from alcohol for close to ten years due to a past struggle with wine consumption. “I’ve caused significant harm to my body,” he said to Esquire. “Time will tell. I’ve stayed clean since then. It will be ten years this December. I stopped at 60 and haven’t touched a drop since. Now, opportunities are arising for me – it feels like being 70. It’s genuine. And it’s alright. This is the final chapter – if I get another thirty years, what would I like to accomplish? My mother lived to be 97.
This weekend, the much-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 Academy Award-winning action film, “Gladiator II,” premieres. Starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Washington, it promises to be an exciting continuation of the story. (You can read THR’s exclusive interview with Scott for more insights.)
