As a die-hard fan of Ridley Scott’s cinematic masterpieces, I can confidently say that the man is nothing short of a modern-day alchemist, transforming ordinary stories into golden tales that captivate audiences worldwide. His latest creation, Gladiator II, is yet another testament to his unparalleled storytelling prowess.
There are many things you could call Ridley Scott, but lazy isn’t one of them. The 86-year-old director is still going strong, with his recently released Gladiator II smashing it at the box office (and earning mixed-to-positive reviews from critics). The film only just hit US theaters, but Scott already has plans for a trilogy. As the idea is still in development, very little is known about Gladiator III. But Ridley Scott just gave us a clue to work with, as he says the threequel will be inspired by one of the most iconic and divisive cinematic trilogies of all-time: The Godfather.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Ridley Scott hinted that ‘Gladiator III’ may draw storytelling elements from Francis Ford Coppola’s contentious film, ‘The Godfather: Part III’. Unlike ‘The Godfather’, you won’t find characters sleeping with the fishes or horse heads in beds in ‘Gladiator III’. Instead, Scott is inspired by Michael Corleone’s transformation into a reluctant leader. He explained, “I’ve always had this idea that ‘The Godfather’ ends with Michael not wanting the job. He sits there, and there’s this close-up on Al [Pacino].
Scott acknowledged that Lucius, portrayed by Paul Mescal, isn’t like the villainous Michael in “The Godfather: Part III.” However, the director seems to have drawn significant inspiration from Michael’s reluctance to assume the family business. This reluctance is particularly evident given all that he’s experienced and witnessed on his journey to this point. Scott further added…
“He’s already had his hand kissed. He’s betrayed his wife with lies. [Lucius] isn’t quite that evil at all. He’s wondering, ‘Father, what do I do?’ Paul not wanting the job is a good place to start.”
Paul Mescal Is “Massively Down” For ‘Gladiator III’
Currently, Ridley Scott merely has the concept of “Gladiator III” in his mind. As of now, Paramount hasn’t given the go-ahead for its production. However, considering the impressive early performance of “Gladiator II,” a trilogy seems quite probable. Scott’s sequel made an impressive $55.5 million during its domestic opening weekend. Prior to that, it had already earned $80 million from an international release a week earlier. Despite stiff competition from “Wicked,” “Gladiator II” is anticipated to perform well at the box office throughout its run, and when it becomes available for home viewing on streaming platforms or DVD (which is almost obsolete).
It seems that although there hasn’t been an official confirmation for a third “Gladiator” movie, Paul Mescal has shown interest and appears eager to reprise his role. In a recent interview, Mescal was asked about potentially returning for another installment of the franchise, to which he enthusiastically expressed his willingness. The conclusion of “Gladiator II” left Lucius in a position that suggests a return to complete the trilogy. Given the positive response to the second film, it’s evident that fans are keen on seeing Mescal again. Regardless of whether or not Mescal will appear in “Gladiator III,” his collaboration with Ridley Scott continues, as they are currently working together on an adaptation of the post-apocalyptic novel “The Dog Stars.
