As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersing myself in historical strategy games, I must say that Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of Napoleon is a cinematic masterpiece that truly captures the essence of the era. The additional 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage, especially the Battle of Marengo scene, adds a new layer of depth to the storyline, making it feel more like a grand strategy game unfolding on screen rather than just a movie.

Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of his 2023 historical epic Napoleon has landed on Apple TV+.

Apple Original Films has unveiled an extended edition featuring 48 additional minutes of unseen material from the critically acclaimed film Napoleon: The Director’s Cut. In this new take, Joaquin Phoenix portrays Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby brings Josephine to life, as we delve further into the background and rise of the iconic military figure, focusing on their tumultuous relationship.

The revised version of the movie, directed by the director, delves into Josephine’s backstory, showcasing more elaborate costumes, grander stage designs, and a never-before-seen Battle of Marengo sequence, as suggested by Apple. Contrastingly, the initial Napoleon film, scripted by David Scarpa, covers an expansive period of three decades in European history, depicting Napoleon’s rise from a military commander to Emperor of France in 1804 and his eventual exile.

Napoleon is portrayed in this production with grand battlefield sequences, focusing on the renowned French political figure who gained power during the French Revolution. He led numerous victorious campaigns throughout the Revolutionary Wars, eventually ascending to the position of Emperor of France in 1804. The cast includes Ben Miles, Matthew Needham, Tahar Rahim, Youssef Kerkour, Phil Cornwell, and others, with Phoenix playing the initial short-lived French king.

The Director’s Cut version of ‘Napoleon’ delves deeper into the events surrounding Napoleon’s downfall, from his attempted assassination to his unsuccessful invasion of Russia. This Apple Studios and Scott Free Productions joint production serves as an in-depth exploration of these historical moments.

In this new edition, Scott collaborated alongside Kevin Walsh, Mark Huffam, and Phoenix. Michael Pruss and Aidan Elliott took on the roles of executive producers.
