As a cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous franchises, I must say that the latest addition to the Alien saga, Alien: Romulus, has truly taken me by surprise. Having grown up on Ridley Scott’s original masterpiece, and following its sequels with bated breath, I can confidently state that Alien: Romulus is a worthy successor.
The director of “Alien: Romulus,” Fede Álvarez, anticipated receiving feedback from the franchise’s creator, Ridley Scott, after he watched the movie. But Scott’s initial response caught Álvarez off guard – he adored it. During the film’s production, Scott and “Aliens” director James Cameron offered advice to Álvarez. However, upon seeing the completed movie, showcasing Álvarez’s unique directorial touches, Scott’s reaction could have gone either way. Yet, it appears he was more than willing to shower praise on the newest installment in the series.
As a dedicated fan eagerly awaiting the release of “Alien: Romulus,” I must admit that I wasn’t entirely prepared for its extraordinary box office success during its debut weekend. Surpassing the $100 million mark, this film has proven to be an unmitigated triumph, primarily due to Álvarez’s commitment to the familiar format and his knack for infusing the narrative with intense violence and grisly spectacle.
As soon as I received the final cut of Romulus from the director, I immediately sat down to watch it. Afterward, he reached out to me personally to gauge my raw reactions to the film. In an exclusive interview with Collider, I shared some insights about that conversation.
“After editing the movie, I immediately sent it over to him since he was in a theater, eager to share my excitement about his initial reactions and feelings towards the film. I decided to meet up with him, taking notes at a nearby table, ready to jot down any insights or comments he might share.”
He recollects his initial response: upon entering, he exclaimed, “Well, what else can I say? It’s simply fantastic.” Then he added, “This could be a big film.” His conviction was evident that the film would be successful. He predicted, “I believe it has the potential to perform as well as Prometheus did.” Here’s hoping his prediction proves accurate. Interestingly, at the time I thought this project would cater primarily to horror enthusiasts, but it seems it’s shaping up to be an event movie, rather than just a niche one for the horror community.
Alien: Romulus is Fede Álvarez’s Movie
Although Álvarez consulted with both Scott and Cameron during the production of “Alien: Romulus“, the ultimate creative direction of the movie remained solely Álvarez’s vision. As a producer for the project, Scott provided guidance on maintaining the integrity of the “Alien” franchise, but did not intervene in the filmmaking process itself.
“All franchises face the risk of fading away unless someone takes charge and moves forward with an idea, much like Fede who is full of energy. I found myself stepping aside to let him lead the way… Fede had a clear vision for his business, and it was extensive. However, extensive plans are common in business, and so we delved into those details.”
It’s fair to assert that the enchanting blend of elements in Alien: Romulus has given a fresh boost to the franchise, much like how Prey revitalized the Predator brand. Given the apprehensions surrounding Disney’s acquisition of these properties during their merger with Fox, it appears that these timeless sci-fi series have never been in better hands.
