As a longtime Tolkien enthusiast and avid gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth, I must admit that my initial excitement for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is tinged with a touch of apprehension. The revelation that Charlie Vickers’ Sauron will not be the sole actor portraying the character this season has left me feeling somewhat perplexed and frustrated, to put it mildly.
In one week’s time, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 will grace our television screens, and I’m slowly gaining insights into what we might encounter in the upcoming episodes. The character portrayed by Charlie Vickers as Sauron seems poised for a significant enhancement this season, taking on a more prominent role as the primary antagonist following the jaw-dropping revelation of his identity during Season 1’s finale. Nevertheless, I find myself grappling with mixed emotions upon learning that a different actor will portray Sauron in this season.
I Have A Problem With Sauron Being Played By Two Actors This Season
In the opening sequence of Season 2 for “The Rings of Power,” we’ll travel back a millennium to see Sauron, Orcs, and Adar united in a flashback. Instead of Charlie Vickers taking on the role this time, Jack Lowden from “Slow Horse” will embody that version of the character.
I find this situation troubling since I believe it lessens Vickers’ intimidating presence at the start of Season 2. While it’s true that Sauron didn’t always maintain the same appearance to keep audiences on edge, thinking he could appear anywhere, I personally feel it becomes challenging for viewers to develop interest, fear, and even empathy towards a villain when they constantly change their looks in different scenes.
Furthermore, the character of Vickers will appear dramatically changed in the upcoming version, almost unrecognizable as an elf. Is it necessary to add another actor for flashback sequences, potentially causing confusion among viewers? Seems redundant.
Charlie Vickers Has Teased The Reason Why He’s Not The Only Sauron Actor
In a fresh interview for the “Rings of Power” on YouTube, Charlie Vickers expressed immense enthusiasm over the addition of a new cast member. His comments hint at the creative choice to feature multiple actors embodying the sinister figure from Middle-earth.
One of his sort of primary powers is the ability to change forms.
Considering this perspective, I believe the show aims to convey that Sauron doesn’t maintain a fixed appearance; instead, he possesses the capacity to transform and adapt himself to fit in, thereby executing his malevolent plans spanning multiple eras undetected. If Sauron retained the same look for too long, it could potentially lead people to recognize him, making it intriguing to observe him adopt new forms over time.
If they’ve already decided to alter Vickers’ appearance significantly for Season 2, why not opt for a change in the original actor’s appearance instead of replacing him partially? It seems more logical to just modify the actor’s looks once more.
In any case, I’m eagerly anticipating the “Sexy Sauron” portrayal by Cynthia Addai-Robinson this season, a term that strikes me as peculiar. Don’t forget to tune in to The Rings of Power and prepare for the new season’s debut on August 29, which you can access with an Amazon Prime subscription.
