Rishi Kapoor invited me on Mera Naam Joker set to watch Russian circus' 'pretty girls' in 'short skirts'; recalls filmmaker Rahul Rawail

As an ardent fan of Indian cinema, especially the legendary Raj Kapoor’s body of work, I am absolutely captivated by the fascinating tale of Rahul Rawail and his experiences with the late actors Rishi Kapoor and Raj Kapoor on the sets of Mera Naam Joker.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d express it this way: I’m deeply passionate about classic movies, and one that truly stands out for me is Raj Kapoor’s masterpiece, “Mera Naam Joker” from 1970. This groundbreaking film, which gained a devoted following over the decades, features Simi Grewal, Xenia Ryabikina, Padmini, and Rishi Kapoor in pivotal roles. What sets this movie apart is its unique portrayal of the collaboration between Indian circus artists and their Russian counterparts, showcasing the rich artistic exchange between our two cultures.

Film director Rahul Rawail, who had a deep friendship with the late Rishi Kapoor, shared stories from his visits to the filming locations of “Mera Naam Joker” and their special connection.

When Rishi Kapoor asked Rahul Rawail to visit Mera Naam Joker’s set

In an exclusive conversation with Friday Talkies, Rahul Rawail revealed that Rishi Kapoor once told him that his father, Raj Kapoor, had initiated the filming of the Russian circus at Azad Maidan in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), before it was completed.

According to Rishi, Rahul reminisced, “The Russian circus girls are stunningly beautiful. They’re petite and youthful, often wearing mini-skirts.” At fifteen years old, the filmmaker found this notion particularly enticing.

Rahul revealed that he accompanied Rishi Kapoor to the film sets and observed Raj Kapoor managing a team of 5,000 people from a single position. The esteemed director of “The Love Story” expressed that Raj Kapoor exuded self-assurance on set and possessed an impressive eye for detail.

Here’s how Raj Kapoor inspired Rahul Rawail to join films

Rahul Rawail shared that he frequently dropped by the set of Mera Naam Joker, a movie from 1970, each day. This was after his initial visit with Rishi Kapoor. Later on, Rahul discussed his desire to work with Raj Kapoor as an assistant director to his parents. Upon approval, his father, filmmaker Harnam Singh Rawail, arranged a meeting with senior Kapoor.

After recalling their encounter, Rahul shared that Raj Kapoor had identified his passion for films during the shooting of Mera Naam Joker. The director-actor noticed Rahul’s consistent presence on the set for ten days and subsequently invited him to be a part of it.

Rahul Rawail opens up on his bond with Rishi Kapoor

Rahul Rawail recounted his long-standing friendship with Rishi Kapoor, which began in kindergarten. With a nostalgic tone, Rawail reflected on their 60-year-old connection. He mentioned that regardless of any disagreements between them, they would still communicate daily.

Rahul Rawail kicked off his film industry journey working as an assistant director for Raj Kapoor on “Mera Naam Joker” and later collaborated with him in the production of “Bobby.” His first stint as a director came in 1980 with the release of “Gunahgaar,” featuring Parveen Babi, Rishi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumer, and Asha Parekh in pivotal roles.

Rahul has directed movies like Love Story, Betaab, Anjaam, Dacait, Anjaam, and Arjun Pandit.

At the same time, Rishi Kapoor was the younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. He began his acting career by starring in the leading role of Raj Kapoor’s film, Bobby, opposite Dimple Kapadia.

Before Rishi’s passing, he appeared in Hitesh Bhatia’s 2022 movie “Sharmaji Namkeen.” However, due to unfortunate circumstances, Rishi didn’t get to finish the film. In his place, Paresh Rawal took over and completed the production of the 2022 film.

Raj Kapoor is most famously known for producing and acting in films such as Shree 420, Sangam, Awaara, Chori Chori, Anari, Kal Aaj Aur Kal, and Dharam Karam. In addition, he skillfully directed movies including Aag, Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Prem Rog, and Ram Teri Ganga Maili.

I’m a lifestyle expert here to share some unfortunate news about two beloved figures from Bollywood. Back in 1988, at the age of 63, Raj Kapoor took his last breath after battling asthma. More recently, Rishi Kapoor, who lived until April 2020, was diagnosed with complications from leukemia and passed away.
