Rob McElhenney Reveals He Was Cut From Harrison Ford & Brad Pitt Film Twice

Rob McElhenney, the actor and mind behind the popular sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” confessed that he played a role in the action-thriller featuring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford, titled “The Devil’s Own.” Yet, upon watching the film, he discovered his entire part had been left out: “Everyone else was an A-list star. I was a D-list extra on the production floor. I wasn’t even an actor; I was just debris on the editing room’s floor.

McElhenney recently discussed an early career experience on the web series “Hot Ones” (as reported by ScreenRant), where famous personalities eat spicy wings while discussing their work. In the heat of the moment, the star of “It’s Always Sunny” reminisced about being cast in a 1997 action film directed by Alan J. Pakula and even filmed several scenes. However, his character was left on the cutting room floor during post-production, a fact he only discovered when he watched the final version with his family and friends.

Among the most embarrassing and traumatic events in my life was my debut acting role in a film, as it starred stars like Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Julia Styles, and Ruben Blades. I had several scenes with each of them, totaling around four to five different scenes. When the movie was about to release, I discovered that I wasn’t invited to either the premiere or the friends and family screening, despite being so young – just 18 or 19 at the time. Although still a newcomer in the industry, I tried to brush it off, thinking everything would be alright.

For twelve months, I kept assuring everyone, “I’m part of this film,” but they didn’t believe me since I hadn’t been working or doing anything else. Then we all went to see the movie, including my friends, family, and they purchased tickets. However, when we watched it, I wasn’t in the film at all – I was completely cut out! They didn’t inform me beforehand. Everyone involved was an A-list actor, while I was a D-list extra on set. To put it mildly, I wasn’t even an extra; I was just lying on the cutting room floor.

It turns out that McElhenney, who stars in Mythic Quest, had a brief role in Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released in 2024. However, his scene ended up being cut from the final version of the film because it didn’t contribute significantly to the storyline, despite the movie itself featuring numerous cameos that don’t always enhance the narrative.

‘The Devil’s Own’ Is a Polarizing Action Thriller That Not Many Remember Today

The Devil’s Own follows NYPD’s Tom O’Meara (Harrison Ford) as he accepts to let Rory Devaney (Brad Pitt) stay in his home. O’Meara is a family man who doesn’t know Rory is actually an IRA terrorist in disguise. Rory has arrived to the United States in order to purchase missiles for the IRA. Eventually, O’Meara finds out Rory is actually Frankie McGuire, and when the officer confronts him, Frankie goes on the run.

The movie titled “The Devil’s Own” garnered positive responses from the audience, generating a total of $140 million at the box office against an initial investment of $86 million in production costs. Nevertheless, opinions among critics were mixed. While they praised the acting skills of Ford and Pitt, they also raised concerns about the film’s script, which they felt didn’t adequately address its moral complexities. Now, it holds a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 37%, which might not have been as impressive for McElhenney from “Always Sunny.” Nonetheless, looking back, it can be seen as an engaging thriller featuring two Hollywood giants at the peak of their careers.
