Rob Schneider Reacts to Critics Who Suggest He Change His Controversial Stand-up Routine: 'Free Speech Is All Speech'

As a long-time fan of Rob Schneider, I must say that his unwavering commitment to free speech and challenging the audience is truly commendable. His act may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s what makes him stand out. He’s like a spicy jalapeno in a world full of bland vanilla ice cream.

Comedian and actor Rob Schneider, amidst recent criticism including from his own daughter, has no intentions to alter his comedy routine. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schneider addressed the advice to modify parts of his act following an incident at a fundraiser for the Hospitals of Regina Foundation in Canada, where some audience members voiced disapproval and even walked out. However, Schneider views these intense reactions as a sign that he’s “on the right track.”

“I’m ensuring it’s correct. The key point about free speech is, free speech encompasses all types of speech. Free speech isn’t limited to pleasant or socially acceptable expressions. Instead, it’s the speech that pushes boundaries and makes us think differently. It’s the unconventional, challenging speech. Speeches that are simple or widely accepted don’t require protection because they’re already accepted by most people. My role is to provoke thought among my audience.”

Following his conviction that he was present to provoke and entertain, Schneider characterized the vast northern region as operating under a restrictive government, labeling demonstrators as terrorists.

“I’m glad I stood firm against the dictatorial actions taken by the current government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and I take pride in being someone who has upset them. If given the opportunity again, I would not hesitate to do it once more, but I doubt they will welcome me back any time soon.”

At a charity event in June, Schneider’s act was abruptly ended due to some attendees leaving. Later, The Hospitals of Regina Foundation issued a statement saying; “We do not support, agree with, or promote Mr. Schneider’s views as presented during his comedy routine. We understand that on this occasion, the performance fell short of our audience’s and team’s expectations.”

“People Get Upset About Things Now. And That’s OK.”

Although the specifics of Schneider’s speech at the event, including his jokes and topics discussed, have not been made public officially, some attendees later shared details about it. Tweeting at the time, @geokaren mentioned that Deuce Bigalow actor delivered “rants” covering vaccines, women’s rights, and the notion of white men being oppressed. These subjects seem fitting for a hospital fundraiser discussion.

Schneider, on the other hand, doesn’t focus on people’s responses; instead, he finds humor in stirring up emotions and sees upset reactions as a key component of good comedy. Some may argue that provoking emotions contradicts the essence of comedy, but it’s his professional path.

“Nowadays, it’s normal for people to feel upset about various things. That’s perfectly fine. I believe that as society becomes more complex and comedy gets harder to navigate, stand-up and art become even more intriguing. When life is smooth sailing, art tends to be dull. So while the ’90s might have been less stimulating, this current era with its challenges makes for an exciting time in the world of art.”

Elle King, the daughter of Schneider, has recently disclosed difficulties she experienced as a child due to his fame. She remembered feeling overlooked on set, getting in trouble for interrupting scenes, and dealing with her father’s concerns about her weight and tattoos.

I didn’t shy away from expressing my disagreement with him, voicing, “It seems you’re speaking without proper knowledge, and your remarks about drag and anti-gay rights are unwarranted. Frankly, it’s best if you reconsider your stance.” Later, Schneider apologized for his past actions towards me, acknowledging his shortcomings as a father figure, expressing regret, and wishing King nothing but the best, stating that he holds her in complete affection.
