At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), made a surprising comeback. Instead of reprising his role as Tony Stark, Downey will take on a new character: Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four. This unexpected announcement has sparked debates among Marvel fans and left some disappointed Kang the Conqueror enthusiasts feeling shortchanged.
Fans had anticipated that the San Diego Comic-Con would unveil a new actor for the role of Kang following the studio’s decision to part ways with Jonathan Majors, who previously portrayed Kang in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Loki,” after last year’s conviction on assault and harassment charges. Similar to the reaction of Kang’s supporters, there was considerable bewilderment and agitation after the major announcement. Some enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the return of the renowned actor as a villain in the MCU. In contrast, others had hoped for a more faithful adaptation of Doctor Doom’s comic book character.
Alongside the announcement of Downey Jr’s return and Kang’s absence in upcoming Marvel projects, the studio disclosed that Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Endgame, will once more team up with Marvel to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s the reason we have always been drawn to comic books. That tale is Secret Wars.
We’re thrilled beyond words to revisit this intricate universe and delve deeper into the captivating complexity of Victor Von Doom. And who better to embark on this journey with than the exceptional Robert Downey Jr.?
The film “Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled for release in theaters on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to premiere on May 7, 2027.
