As a devoted admirer, I can confirm that Robert Eggers, much like me who prefers the timeless charm of vintage records over digital streams, seems to have no intentions of stepping into the realm of contemporary films brimming with cutting-edge gadgets and innovations of our era.
As a gamer, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the director of Nosferatu mentioning that the concept of creating new projects leaves him feeling queasy. He voiced this to Rotten Tomatoes.
Eggers finds the notion of taking photos of cars and especially phones distasteful. In today’s world, it’s necessary to capture images of phones for contemporary stories, but he has no intention of creating films set in the present.
The director has overseen various productions that range from the 1630s and 1890s New England to the Viking Age, such as the films “The Witch” (2015), “The Lighthouse” (2019) and “The Northman” (2022). More recently, the movie “Nosferatu” (20XX), featuring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgård, is set in 1830s Transylvania.
During the interview, Eggers was questioned about the timeline he might consider for a future project. He replied, “I’m not sure. I could possibly set it in 1950, but the period before World War II seems more intriguing to me creatively.
It seems that Eggers plans to stay within his preferred historical era for his upcoming project, titled Werwulf, which is a horror film about werewolves. Additionally, he collaborated with Sjón in writing this movie. Although specifics are limited, it’s been mentioned that the plot takes place in 13th century England. Furthermore, there are reports suggesting he will pen and direct a follow-up to the 1986 film Labyrinth.
Eggers’ reimagining of the 1922 classic “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror,” titled “Nosferatu, was a chilling narrative that revolved around an obsessive relationship between a tormented young woman and a terrifying vampire who pursued her. This captivating tale left a trail of terror in its wake, garnering it four Oscar nominations.
