Robert Eggers, a leading figure in contemporary horror cinema, continues to impress. Not only has Focus Features revealed details about his upcoming project titled “Werwulf,” but there’s growing chatter about another intriguing venture for the filmmaker who brought Nosferatu back to life. It seems that Focus Features might need to share their prized director with us soon.
It’s been reported that Deadline states Eggers has sealed a contract with TriStar Pictures to pen and direct a new tale of Labyrinth, speculated to be a follow-up to the 1986 Jim Henson musical film starring David Bowie in an iconic role. Sources claim that Eggers is collaborating on the script for this sequel with his partners from The Northman and Werwulf, Sjón, while Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson serving as executive producer. This team looks promising for the anticipated project.
Although the horror movie director hasn’t explicitly verified the deal, he hasn’t dismissed the thrilling speculations either, leaving fans of the Henson classic optimistic. However, it seems that this might not materialize soon as Eggers is known to be working on his next project centered around a well-known horror creature.
From Vampires to Werewolves to Westerns?
Robert Eggers has clarified in a recent interview with ComicBook that he intends to focus on original stories for his upcoming projects, distancing himself from being primarily associated with horror-centric remakes and sequels.
You see, I always have numerous projects in the works since it’s crucial for surviving in this industry and you never know what’s coming next. However, my ultimate goal is to create an original movie with my next film.” – Eggers
The storyline for the upcoming 13th-century werewolf movie titled “Werwulf” remains under wraps, but it’s confirmed that Focus Features will produce and fund this film. The release date in North American theaters is scheduled for Christmas Day 2026, a year following the successful Christmas Day premiere of their recent horror production, “Nosferatu.” Eggers and Sjón, along with Focus and executive producers Chris and Eleanor Columbus from Maiden Voyage, are also on board to produce this project.
As for his upcoming venture, Eggers has been sharing some tantalizing insights; in a conversation with MovieWeb, he hinted at the possibility of a Western project in his near future.
I usually have numerous scripts in progress, and one day I hope to create a Western. I often discuss the tale of a medieval knight I penned which has yet to be produced. There are many fascinating realms to delve into.
For a gifted movie director, there’s no limit to what he can achieve, considering his exceptional body of work including “The Witch”, “The Lighthouse”, “The Northman”, and now “Nosferatu”. A chilling Western could potentially bridge the gap in the horror genre that Eggers’ unique touch is missing, and fans eagerly await the day when his fascination with cowboys keeps him engaged until he finds the time to bring his Western vision to life.
