2024 saw a plethora of terrifyingly good horror films, but among them, Robert Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu, stood out as one of the year’s finest. It wasn’t just another run-of-the-mill remake; it was exceptional! This chilling reinterpretation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 original was nothing short of breathtaking, with Eggers masterfully delivering on every front: meticulous craftsmanship, an unsettling ambiance, and a creeping fear that penetrated to the core. What truly surprised me, however, was the remarkable correlation Eggers drew between Nosferatu and…Batman Returns. Yes, you heard it correctly.
The filmmaker of “The Lighthouse” casually revealed an amusing detail during a discussion about the factors that influenced his chilling, Gothic opus on the “Happy Sad Confused Podcast”. It turns out, it wasn’t until he was in-flight that he noticed the unsettling resemblances between his “Nosferatu” and Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns”. The director of “The Witch” disclosed this.
During one of my flights, I put on the movie Batman Returns. The chilly, gothic ambiance of this film is surprisingly reminiscent of what we were creating here, which I hadn’t noticed before. Interestingly enough, Wayne Manor doesn’t look too dissimilar from Grűnewald Manor, apart from the fact that it’s not falling apart.
Since he’s brought it up, it’s hard not to notice the similarities. Consider this: “Batman Returns,” a film I consider one of Burton’s finest works, is steeped in Gothic atmosphere, from its frost-kissed sets to its twisted, gloomy architecture. It seems less like a modern superhero movie and more like an eerie opera performed within the vivid nightmares of Victorian times.
Does it ring a bell? The legendary master of historical horror has grasped aspects that many modern horror filmmakers have yet to achieve, and his movie Nosferatu exudes an eerie atmosphere with its decaying castles and frosty landscapes, leaving you with the sensation of being confined in an eternal twilight.
The resemblance between Wayne Manor in Batman Returns and the manors’ characters is uncanny, much like the villains in the movie. While both are grand and imposing, they also carry an air of tragedy and mystery. The cold halls and towering spires of Wayne Manor mirror this perfectly, while Grünewald Manor from Nosferatu seems to have been through time and decay, with a crumbling facade and heavy gloom that almost suffocates it. In many ways, these two manors could be seen as cousins, sharing similarities yet separated by the passage of time and decay.
It’s intriguing to note that the link wasn’t deliberate, but Eggers has consistently found inspiration in history, folklore, and classic cinema (including Sponge Bob on occasion). His acknowledgment of Burton’s influence, although it may have been subconscious, makes complete sense. The 1992 Batman sequel isn’t just a superhero movie; it’s a Gothic fairy tale filled with darkness and an enchanting surrealism. These characteristics align perfectly with the kind of immersive horror that the director of The Northman often crafts.
Delving deeper into their similarities, the more links become apparent between Burton’s Penguin and Eggers’ Count Orlok. Despite their contrasting appearances, one grotesque and tragic, the other monstrous yet pitiable, they share a common thematic thread. These films delve into themes of loneliness, power, and the darkness within us all. This creative overlap makes you ponder: what other unconventional connections might we discover if we step back and let our minds wander freely?
