In an interview with Vanity Fair, Pattinson mused about the past era of filmmaking, expressing relief that independent films and directors are gaining recognition among mainstream viewers again. Interestingly, he remarked that despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and strikes in recent years, many had predicted the demise of cinema. “It seemed like it was on its last legs,” the actor stated, sharing that he too felt this way, even approaching a point where he lost interest in films. He further explained, “Recently, there’s been a surge of very intriguing movies.” Among these were major franchise titles like Deadpool and Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Wicked, but also lesser-known indie hits such as Anora, The Substance, Conclave, Longlegs, All of Us Strangers, and Poor Things. Many more unique directorial visions were also showcased that year, often overlooked by casual moviegoers.

Robert Pattinson Is Perfectly Balancing Studio Movies With Independent Films

For quite some time, Robert Pattinson was primarily recognized as the sparkly character, Edward Cullen, from the Twilight films. But in 2017, he broke free from that mold with a remarkable performance in Good Time, produced by The Safdie Brothers for A24. Since then, Pattinson has managed to strike a balance between independent films and major blockbuster productions. In the past decade, his most prominent role undoubtedly is Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne, in The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves. Even this film, unlike many typical studio movies, stands out from the generic films that moviegoers have been increasingly critical of.

In simpler terms, Robert Pattinson explained, “For two years, it felt like every actor was saying, ‘What’s going on? Nothing’s exciting,’ but I’m not implying that everything produced during that time wasn’t interesting. However, it seemed overly studio-produced. I’m not sure what happened during my Saturn return or whatever it is, but now there are fascinating roles everywhere.

One intriguing aspect is found in director Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming sci-fi movie, “Mickey 17.” Robert Pattinson takes on the role of Mickey, a volunteer for disposable duties during an interstellar voyage. Each time he perishes while performing repairs or tasks, his consciousness gets transferred to a fresh clone. The film also features Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Holliday Grainger. It’s set to hit theaters on March 17, 2025.
