It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of one of the key writers behind several prominent 21st century sci-fi franchises, who died at the age of 51 after a long battle with kidney disease in his Los Angeles home. Born on July 20, 1973, in Mexico City, Orci immigrated to the United States with his family when he was ten years old. He nurtured an enduring love for sci-fi series such as Star Trek and Transformers, both of which he significantly contributed to transforming.
Roberto Orci‘s demise is undeniably going to cause ripples, given his significant influence as a screenwriter during the 2000s and 2010s. His creative contributions, particularly in films like Transformers and Star Trek, profoundly transformed these franchises and ushered in an exciting new epoch for sci-fi blockbusters. Upon hearing the news of his passing, Orci’s brother, J.R., issued a statement expressing their sentiments.
In my perspective, I was a visionary narrator, brimming with an endless wellspring of empathy and radiance. Yet, it was not just my creative prowess that stood out; I was also a caring companion who would pause my journey to aid a stranger and offer a sanctuary to the stray canine often overlooked at the shelter.
When Orci was 17 years old, he crossed paths with his future writing companion, Alex Kurtzman, at Crossroads, a prestigious school in Santa Monica, California. At the age of 24, Kurtzman and Orci took on the role of showrunners for the Sam Raimi-produced series “Hercules: The Legendary Journey”. They later encountered J.J. Abrams and created the series “Alias”, establishing another long-lasting collaboration. During this partnership, Orci teamed up with Abrams to co-write the scripts for “Mission: Impossible 3”, “Star Trek”, and “Star Trek Into Darkness”. He also served as a producer on all three films in the Kelvin timeline “Star Trek” series. In 2005, Orci collaborated on the scripts for “The Island” and “The Legend of Zorro”. Michael Bay was so taken with the script for “The Island” that he invited Orci and Kurtzman to pen the screenplay for the 2007 film “Transformers”. Orci revisited the franchise to co-write the script for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.
Roberto Orci Played a Pivotal Role in Reshaping Some of Hollywood’s Biggest Franchises
In addition to their work, Orci and Kurtzman penned the screenplay for the 2011 film “Cowboys & Aliens,” a unique sci-fi collaboration that gathered some of Tinseltown’s most prominent creative minds such as Jon Favreau, Ron Howard, Damon Lindeloff, Harrison Ford, and Daniel Craig. After their successful reboots of “Transformers” and “Star Trek,” Kurtzman and Orci were recruited to mold Sony’s vision for the new “The Amazing Spider-Man” series and its spin-offs. In this endeavor, Orci contributed as a co-writer for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
2014 marked the end of Kurtzman and Orci’s long-term collaboration. Following this, Kurtzman took up plans for Sony’s spinoff of The Amazing Spider-Man, while Orci aimed to transition into directing with Star Trek 3. However, Orci left the production of Star Trek 3, which eventually became Star Trek Beyond. Orci’s final credited film as a writer was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but he continued to thrive in television writing and producing. He revived the series Hawaii Five-0 in 2010, followed by creating Sleepy Hollow and Limitless. His last two roles were as a producer for Now You See Me 2 and The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman.
For approximately seven years prior, Orci had been out of work. He openly discussed his battle with alcoholism, which resulted in numerous hospitalizations due to his condition and stints in rehab. In more recent times, Orci found himself embroiled in controversy. In August 2024, his wife, Adele Heather Taylor, publicly accused him of sexual assault, claiming that Orci was a volatile, bipolar alcoholic who would lash out violently towards her. The couple parted ways in December 2022, with Orci denying these accusations.
Orci is mourned by his father Roberto Orci Sr., mother Macuqui Robau-Garcia, siblings J.R. Orci, Taylor Orci, Courtney Ford, and pet dog Bogey. The tributes for Orci are pouring in from Hollywood, with posts from Lucy Lawless, Rob Liefeld, and others available to read below.
