Robin Hood TV Series Now in the Works at MGM+

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of cinematography, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming Robin Hood series on MGM+. Having grown up with Errol Flynn’s dashing portrayal and Kevin Costner’s gritty interpretation, I am thrilled to see a modern take on this timeless tale. The prospect of historical accuracy coupled with psychological depth sounds intriguing, especially when it comes to the relationship between Rob and Marian.

The legendary tale of Robin Hood has captivated audiences for generations, inspiring a range of film and television adaptations since 1908, when the character first appeared in director Percy Stow’s silent film. The themes of justice and rebellion continue to resonate with fans of all ages. Now, MGM+ is reimagining the iconic character in a new series, offering a fresh take on the English folklore hero. Deadline reports that the streamer’s 10-part Robin Hood series will hail from showrunner John Glenn (SEAL Team), producer-director Jonathan English (Librarians: The Next Chapter), and executive producer Todd Lieberman.

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that starting next February 2025, a project I’ve been eagerly anticipating will come to life at PFI Studios in Serbia. This production, brought to you by Lionsgate Television, is set to hit our screens later in the year. English and Glenn are meticulously crafting this work to preserve the essence of our cherished vigilante, all while infusing a fresh, innovative twist into the timeless story of the legendary outlaw who robs from the wealthy to feed the needy. Can’t wait!

For decades, Robin Hood has been brought to life on the big screen by prominent actors like Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner, Cary Elwes, Russell Crowe, and more recently Taron Egerton. At present, no actor is set for the role in the upcoming English and Glenn’s series. Discussing their project with Deadline, the creators mentioned:

We’re thrilled to bits about collaborating with MGM+, Lionsgate, and Todd, in reviving the timeless tale of Robin Hood – a brand we both cherished since our younger days.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled about the fresh take on the upcoming Robin Hood reboot! It promises to blend a contemporary feel with meticulous historical authenticity. Michael Wright, from MGM+, shared that the narrative focuses on Rob’s love story with Marian, a character renowned for her unwavering loyalty and bravery in traditional tales. Wright even hinted at some intriguing twists by saying:

This is an enticing, intelligent, broad, emotionally captivating reinterpretation of the classic tale, offering historical accuracy, complex character development, and a profound exploration of the bond shared by Rob and Marian.

The age-old story “Robin Hood” follows a charismatic outlaw who robs the wealthy to aid the needy, but it’s his love interest, Maid Marian, who shines in the spotlight in the 2022 movie “The Adventures of Maid Marian,” starring Sophie Craig. In the MGM+ series, Robin Hood and Maid Marian team up to combat injustice across the kingdom. The summary for the upcoming show goes as follows:

After the Norman conquest of England, Rob, son of a Saxon woodcutter, and Marian, daughter of a Norman nobleman, develop a romantic bond. They unite in their quest for fairness and liberty. As Rob emerges as the head of a group of outlaw rebels, Marian gains access to power within the royal court. Together, they strive to counteract corruption at court and restore tranquility to the kingdom.

Apart from the MGM+ series, another Robin Hood project is being developed, titled “The Death of Robin Hood.” This upcoming film will have Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer in the lead roles, under the direction of Michael Sarnoski. Known for its dark tone, this movie delves into the violent criminal exploits of Robin Hood during his later years. Production is slated to start in February next year, coinciding with when the English and Glenn series begins. Carly Kleinbart and Nicole Bryant will oversee the series for Hidden Pictures, as stated by Lieberman.

The iconic character Robin Hood will make his grand debut exclusively on MGM+ within the United States, with viewers in the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg also gaining access to this new production as subscribers.
