As a seasoned movie lover with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Ron Perlman is a true gem in Hollywood. His versatility as an actor, director, and producer has left an indelible mark on countless films, from the haunting Beauty and the Beast to the action-packed Hellboy series.
Ron Perlman has been a Hollywood stalwart with over 300 credits as an actor, director, and producer. We recently spoke with Perlman about his latest feature, Absolution, where he co-stars with Liam Neeson as a ruthless Boston crime lord. We get to see Perlman without thick layers of makeup and prosthetics, which have covered the actor in some of his most memorable work, from In the Name of the Rose and Beauty and the Beast to Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy films.
For over three decades, Perlman and del Toro have been not just colleagues but also close friends. It’s unexpected that Perlman isn’t portraying Frankenstein‘s monster in del Toro’s latest Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, given how well-suited he seems for the role. Despite this, Perlman has expressed his support for the film.
“I know that Guillermo is always going to get the best people for what his vision kind of tells him is needed. I know I would have been in Frankenstein if he thought that I was the best guy for one of the roles. So I’m very okay with the fact that I’m not in this one, you know, and I hope and pray that there’s something else for us down the road. Because
that is a venerable old relationship that has yielded tremendous amounts of not only credits, but joy and laughter and memories
.”
Del Toro’s Frankenstein boasts an illustrious ensemble cast, featuring Oscar Isaac portraying Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the monster created by Frankenstein, and notable performances from Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Lars Mikkelsen in supporting roles. Although Perlman isn’t part of this particular production, he is known for advocating del Toro to actors, as he shared:
I share with everyone, ‘I hope every actor I adore has someone like Guillermo del Toro in their lives.’ Working with him, it’s not just about the projects we’ve collaborated on. It’s about the shared laughter, embraces, adventures, meals, and memories we’ve made together.
Ron Perlman Teamed Up with Liam Neeson Without Reading the Script
Meanwhile, as a cinephile, I’ve always got a pipeline filled with exciting projects, and my latest release is the heart-pounding Liam Neeson thriller, “Absolution.” Given our professional rapport and high esteem for each other, all it took was hearing his name to give him the role. As I shared, “He’s one of those actors whose presence alone is enough when you hold them in the same regard that I do.
When they mentioned there was a Liam Neeson movie seeking an actor, and they were planning to send the script over, I responded by saying, “No need for that. Go ahead and finalize the agreement. Let me know where and when it is. I can work out the specifics later.
Speaking about him, with such an impressive film career and a professional reputation so finely crafted, Perlman expressed it’s a privilege to be in his company. Every instance I had to work alongside Liam’s character was a precious moment, he added.
For over 50 years, we’ve been walking this path together. By the time we reached our shared stage, we had built a strong foundation. This wasn’t just about understanding the world around us, but also recognizing the divine coincidence of being in the same film. I was still learning him then. It was only then that I discovered how dedicated he is to his art, a commitment that isn’t always easy to find these days.
At this moment, “Absolution” can be seen playing in cinemas, courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films. As for “Frankenstein”, it’s still undergoing production and is set to debut as an exclusive on Netflix in the year 2025.
