In the realm of cinema, I’ve always seen Ron Perlman as the quintessential Hellboy. He donned the iconic red prosthetics back in 2004 for Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy, a role he reprised four years later in Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Both films were adored by fans and critics alike, yet failed to meet the financial expectations of the studios, leading to the abandonment of Del Toro’s planned Hellboy trilogy. However, Perlman, like many others, remains hopeful that Del Toro’s Hellboy universe will make a comeback one day.
During an interview with That Hashtag Show, Perlman expressed his readiness to reprise the role of the titular demon for a third film, but he made it clear that he has just one condition… fortunately, this is something that fans everywhere can support. When asked about a potential return, Perlman quickly responded with, “I’d be happy to [return] for Guillermo.” Since The Golden Army, David Harbor played Hellboy in the poorly received 2019 remake – despite Harbor delivering an impressive performance as Hellboy, the film itself fell short of del Toro’s previous work. Just last year, Jack Kesy stepped into the role for Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a production that was also met with largely negative reviews from critics.
During the interview, Perlman disclosed that he’s been offered roles as Hellboy from various directors following the initial film, with some assuming this includes the 2019 reboot. Yet, Perlman demonstrated his allegiance to del Toro. “I’ve had chances to portray him for others and I declined,” he shared, adding:
“I’ve been given opportunities to play Hellboy for other directors and I chose not to.” (or) “There have been offers for me to reprise the role of Hellboy from different directors, but I turned them down.” (or) “Other directors have invited me back as Hellboy, but I decided against it.
“That’s his franchise as far as I’m concerned, and I’m his boy.”
Could Guillermo del Toro Ever Return for ‘Hellboy 3’?
Fans adore Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy universe above all others featuring the character. Ever since the end of The Golden Army in 2008, fans have yearned for del Toro and Ron Perlman to reprise their roles to complete the planned trilogy. Regrettably, even the creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, considers this a distant possibility now. Mignola introduced Hellboy back in 1993 through Dark Horse Comics. During the production of both movies, Mignola collaborated closely with del Toro; however, he too has relinquished hope for Hellboy 3.
Mike Mignola expressed doubts in 2024 during an interview while promoting “The Crooked Man”. Although the fervor among fans and Perlman’s enthusiasm suggest a potential Hellboy trilogy continuation, Mignola feels that Guillermo del Toro is overly engaged with his numerous upcoming ventures, such as a reinterpretation of “Frankenstein”, which makes it highly unlikely for him to participate in “Hellboy 3”. In essence, Mignola sees the idea as appealing but not practical.
As a devoted Hellboy enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the possibility of Guillermo del Toro resuming his trilogy, but what truly captivates me is the promise of another well-crafted adaptation of this iconic character. Since del Toro and Perlman’s departure from the series, the big screen portrayals of Hellboy have been a rollercoaster ride of disappointment. The 2019 rendition was met with almost unanimous disapproval, garnering a mere 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the release of The Crooked Man, while appreciated by some fans, failed to fully satisfy our collective expectations, managing a modest 39% on RT.
