Roskomnadzor, the Russian communications watchdog, has once again blocked access to BestChange, the largest crypto aggregator platform in Eastern Europe and Russia.
The reason for this ban remains a mystery, but the website has been added to the list of blocked platforms. A spokesperson for BestChange stated that their lawyers are already working on unblocking the website, although they did not disclose the reason behind the ban.
Founded in 2007, BestChange is one of the oldest and largest aggregators of crypto OTC platforms. This is not the first time it has been blocked; it was previously banned in 2017 and 2019, only to have the restrictions lifted later.
This latest ban comes almost six months after Russia introduced a new law on Bitcoin mining and crypto ads. The law prohibits ads for digital assets and services that facilitate the transfer of cryptocurrencies using Russian infrastructure.
In response to the law, Russia’s largest search engine, Yandex, updated its ad policy, banning promotions for crypto exchanges, smart contracts, mining, initial coin offerings, and services that track wallets for money laundering.
As Roskomnadzor continues its crackdown on cryptocurrencies, one can only wonder what other platforms may find themselves in the crosshairs of the Russian watchdog.
