Over the past twelve years, Ross Ulbricht‘s captivating work in movies, documentaries, literature, and podcasts has left a lasting impression. Soon, we’ll hear his tale directly as he shares it in an upcoming documentary, all while incarcerated.
The project refers to Ulbricht experiencing an unexpectedly happy conclusion akin to a Hollywood movie. On Tuesday, he was released from a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona following a pardon granted by President Donald Trump, a promise Trump had made back in May at the Libertarian National Convention.
Ross Ulbricht was handed down two life imprisonments, along with an additional forty years, following his establishment of the illicit online drug platform known as Silk Road, often referred to as the “drug version of Amazon.” The FBI reported that this platform facilitated billions in sales, making Ulbricht a focal point of an intense manhunt. This manhunt reached its climax with his apprehension at a public library in San Francisco in 2013.
Despite significant public curiosity about him, Ulbricht declined to speak with the media after his 2015 conviction. However, filmmakers Jonah Tulis and Blake J. Harris have been working secretly since 2019, amassing over 60 hours of interviews with Ulbricht for an upcoming documentary. They are planning a 2025 release, with Submarine handling global distribution and production of the film.
As a passionate admirer, I’d like to share that our interviews delve deeply into every aspect of Ulbricht’s life, according to co-director Harris, a distinguished author. The journey he took, transforming from an Eagle Scout to becoming the focus of a worldwide manhunt, is truly captivating.
The website played a significant part in making Bitcoin more well-known because it primarily used Bitcoin on Silk Road. Following his conviction, Ulbricht gained widespread admiration among cryptocurrency supporters and libertarians alike, due to their shared beliefs.
According to co-director Tulis, the Silk Road was more than just an event; however, there are numerous misunderstandings regarding its true nature and the real character of Ross. Our film provides an unfiltered perspective on what truly transpired and how events eventually spiraled out of control.
The team also interviewed members of the law enforcement who helped investigate the Silk Road.
After Ulbricht’s arrest, several Silk Road projects emerged, yet none involved his participation directly. Journalist Nick Bilton’s well-received and meticulously researched 2017 book, “American Kingpin,” offered a revealing glimpse into the operations of the Silk Road; however, it was based on journals, chat logs, and interviews with individuals other than Ulbricht. On the big screen, Lionsgate released the 2021 film “Silk Road” to mixed reviews, while The Coen Brothers developed a Silk Road feature for 20th Century Fox that unfortunately never materialized. Meanwhile, Alex Winter, known for his role in “Bill & Ted,” directed the Ulbricht documentary “Deep Web” about a decade ago, with Keanu Reeves providing the narration.
Dan Braun, Ben Braun, Rick Brookwell, Matt Burke, along with Tulis and Harris, are the project’s producers. The executive producers are Douglas Banker, Michael Hughes, Greg Lake, Josh Braun, and Joe Grano.
Previously, Harris and Tulis collaborated on the 2020 documentary titled “Console Wars“, which delved into the fierce competition between Nintendo and Sega in the 1990s for video game market dominance, as well as the 2022 documentary “GameStop: Rise of the Players“, focusing on the meme stock phenomenon. In addition to their documentary work, Harris is also an accomplished author, with his literary contributions including the book version of “Console Wars“, the Oculus publication “The History of the Future“, and an upcoming biography of Larry David.
