As a long-time comedy enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of some of the most iconic panel shows, I am absolutely thrilled about Roy Wood Jr.’s new role as host of CNN’s version of “Have I Got News for You.” His impressive resume, which includes stints on The Daily Show and several stand-up specials, makes him the perfect candidate to bring a fresh, hilarious perspective to this beloved British institution.
Roy Wood Jr. is getting back into the news-and-comedy game.
The former Daily Show cast member and comedian is set to take over hosting duties for Have I Got News for You, which will make its premiere on CNN on September 14th. This marks the debut of CNN’s adaptation of the popular BBC discussion program.
“Since 1990, ‘Have I Got News for You’ has been a long-standing fixture on BBC television, known for its witty take on weekly news events and panelist banter. Now, CNN is planning to create a similar program in partnership with Hat Trick Productions, the team behind the original BBC show.”
“Immigrants have been arriving in America for quite some time, often taking jobs from Black communities. However, I must commend CNN and the immigrant team at Hat Trick Productions for bringing a job to the U.S. Instead of taking a job away, they’ve given me the opportunity to be part of such a revered British institution. It’s an honor to contribute to making sense of America’s complex institutions, which include confusion, name-calling, misinformation, reality TV, and the fast-paced 8-hour news cycle,” Wood stated.
As an ardent fan, I can’t wait to share some exciting news! Similar to “Have I Got News for You,” two captains grace the screen on this BBC gem (these roles are currently filled by Ian Hislop and Paul Merton). CNN will reveal who these captains will be when the show makes its grand debut. The panel of this British institution is a lively blend of comedians, entertainers, and political figures.
John served as a correspondent on “The Daily Show” from 2015 to 2023, also taking over hosting duties following Trevor Noah’s departure. He has showcased his comedic talent in three stand-up specials for Comedy Central. His acting resume includes roles opposite Jon Hamm in “Confess, Fletch,” as well as appearances on “Only Murders in the Building” and “Better Call Saul.” In 2022, he was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy for his work as a producer of the documentary “The Neutral Ground.”
CNN Originals and Hat Trick Productions are responsible for creating the American version of “Have I Got News for You.” Jimmy Mulville, Richard Wilson, and Jim Biederman serve as executive producers for this production.
