As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating virtual worlds and making tough decisions, I can’t help but admire Roy Wood Jr.’s composure during his appearance on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live. In the realm of gaming, we often find ourselves in situations where we must choose between immediate gratification (like accepting that tequila shot) or playing it safe for long-term stability (water in this case).
In Roy’s case, his decision was reminiscent of a high-stakes RPG character who’d rather not take unnecessary risks, especially considering the recent network history. It’s like he was playing a game of career survival instead of D&D!
And as for the joke, well… I guess you could say that Roy Wood Jr. is the ultimate level 9 “Cautious Black Man” in this virtual world we call showbiz, and he just rolled a critical success on his wisdom check when it came to tequila on live TV!
Roy Wood Jr. wasn’t looking to get too crazy this New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Eve, the entertainer-performer showed up as a guest on CNN’s live broadcast hosted by Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. During the show, he was given a chance to take a sip of tequila on camera.
Or, more informally:
On NYE, the funny guy-TV personality dropped by CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson and Andy. While there, he got to take a swig of tequila live on air.
Instead of accepting the New Year’s toast offered by Andy Cohen, as did his “Have I Got News for You” co-stars Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin, Wood chose to decline it.
Oh dear, absolutely not,” the former Daily Show member remarked, then jokingly added, “The last African-American who had a drink on this network was let go. For now, I’ll stick to water – I could use some job security.
On New Year’s Eve, as the co-hosts overlooked his remark, they went ahead and poured a drink for Black and Ruffin instead.

Wood’s remark appears to have been directed at Don Lemon, a CNN anchor who left the network in 2023 following a wave of controversy surrounding his remarks about former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
I was taken aback. After spending 17 years at CNN, I assumed someone in leadership would have communicated this directly to me,” the former anchor of CNN This Morning wrote on social media at the time. “During my entire tenure, I never received any hint that my work at the network wouldn’t continue. It seems there are bigger underlying issues at play. I want to express my gratitude to my colleagues and the various teams I’ve worked with for an amazing ride. They are some of the most skilled journalists in the industry, and I wish them all the best.
Lemon now has his own show, The Don Lemon Show, which streams on social media.
