Rumours Suggest the Next God of War Will Be Set In Egypt

It’s been whispered through gossip and a captivating job listing for an as-yet unrevealed top-tier game, that one of the highly anticipated additions to the God of War series could be pushing boundaries.

According to well-known industry insider DanielRPK, there are rumors circulating that Sony is recruiting Middle Eastern actors for an upcoming high-end video game, which many believe could be the next installment of God of War focusing on Egyptian mythology. The internet has been abuzz with anticipation about what new adventures await Kratos based on this recent news.

If Kratos decides to explore the desert landscapes of ancient Egypt, what might this next installment hold for us? Let’s take a guess.

It Won’t Be Kratos

In the game God of War: Ragnarok and its related DLC Valhalla, it becomes apparent that Kratos has reached his retirement years, signifying an end to his violent career of slaying gods and repeatedly pressing the Circle button. Spoiler Alert: With a new mission to bring tranquility to the Norse realms, it’s likely we won’t witness Kratos taking the lead in the upcoming chapters of the God of War series.

My guess? The torch will pass to Atreus and Angrboda.

This transition could represent one of the most substantial alterations ever in the chronicles of God of War – a daring decision to rejuvenate the franchise with a younger, more tempestuous lead character, either Atreus or Angrboda. As Ragnarok draws to a close, it’s evident that Atreus (or Loki) has lingering matters concerning his Giant lineage yet unresolved. Sony Santa Monica hinted at this juncture as the foundation for a fresh venture and a symbol of Kratos gradually relinquishing control, much like a father watching his son embark on a new journey – in this case, a metaphorical college experience.

The tale of Atreus and Angrboda remained unresolved when Ragnarok’s final moments transitioned towards Kratos and Freya’s forthcoming strategies.

Egypt Was Always in the Cards

In terms of speculation, it seems reasonable that the series could continue with an Egyptian setting. Previously, there have been rumors about an Atreus spin-off, so perhaps this is what they were referring to. Alternatively, those whispers might have been about the canceled God of War live service game I mentioned earlier in my article.

Without a doubt, the mythology of ancient Egypt has been subtly suggested across the series. A wall painting in Tyr’s vault within God of War (2018) hinted at potential explorations southward. Moreover, Mimir made mention of Egyptian deities, particularly Ra, being among the gods and goddesses he knew.

In the expansion pack called Valhalla, the genuine Tyr was depicted using an Egyptian weapon known as Khopesh, which is similar to a sickle-shaped sword and has historical ties with ancient Egyptian rulers. This addition wasn’t haphazard but rather a purposeful wink hinting at potential future directions for the series.

Additionally, Tyr displayed an array of weapons originating from different mythologies, like the Japanese sword (katana) and the Aztec weapon (macuahuitl). This suggests that we may anticipate a more extensive investigation into mythology in the time to come.

Egyptian mythology, however, feels like the front-runner for the next chapter.

A Long-Time Dream

Intriguingly, during the 2019 Raising Kratos documentary about God of War (2018), its creator, Cory Barlog, disclosed that his original idea for the series involved Kratos journeying across the Egyptian desert.

There’s been talk that ancient Egyptian mythology could be revived, and it seems like this intriguing concept is getting more attention. If these rumblings continue, we might witness the resurgence of this age-old dream.

Absolutely, since Sony hasn’t confirmed anything yet, it’s wise to approach these details with a bit of skepticism. But, the appearance of a casting call certainly sparks a wave of exciting possibilities.

To put it simply, I’m excited to find out where the story will progress, with a particular interest in exploring further details of Atreus’ “giant-slaying” journey.

In 2018, the games God of War and its sequel Ragnarök were extraordinary milestones that shaped the PlayStation 4 generation. They significantly altered the character of Kratos, transitioning him from a bloodthirsty, anger-driven deity who slays gods, into a multi-layered, duty-bound father figure.

This character development was a brilliant demonstration of storytelling techniques, crafted specifically by the show’s director for the expanding audience of the series. It’s safe to say that if the series continues without him as the lead character, his presence will definitely be missed.

Even if the upcoming God of War game takes place in Egypt with Atreus as the main character, let’s hope for a guest appearance by Kratos, brandishing his famous Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe. Such an appearance would surely cause quite a stir among fans (perhaps just me included).
