‘Running Point’ Season 2: Cast, Netflix Release Date, Plot, and More

Netflix’s Running Point debuted on February 27, 2025, and instantly rose to the top of the streamer’s charts. The series currently claims the coveted #1 spot on Netflix’s weekly Global Top 10 Shows with over 12 million views. Developed for screens by the talented Mindy Kaling, alongside Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, and starring powerhouse Kate Hudson, Running Point was off to a flying start from the get-go.

The heartfelt and endearing narrative of the series blends professional basketball with family dynamics and unassuming humor, making Running Point the perfect binge-watch. Revolving around Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon, the only sister in the Gordon family, the series chronicles Isla’s behemoth task of helming the Los Angeles Waves basketball team when the presidency is abruptly handed to her by her elder brother. In doing so, Running Point touches on poignant themes, including familial relationships, love, legacy and personal growth, taking the series much further than amounting to a mere comedy. Given this, Netflix’s decision to unleash the Gordon family and the Waves onto courts once more comes as no surprise.

Kate Hudson Has Confirmed That ‘Running Point’ Is Returning for Season 2

Netflix’s decision to renew Running Point is quite swift, with the announcement coming just about a week after the series’ initial release. While the swift renewal is a testament to the streamer’s confidence in the series, it is also a nod to the incredible performance of Running Point and the numbers it has been accumulating on the platform. With over 12 million views in the span of two weeks and a solid 78% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, the Hudson-led series has done exceptionally well for the streamer.

The streamer announced Running Point Season 2 via X, sharing a video that first highlighted the demands of fans for a follow-up season and then morphed into Kate Hudson making the official announcement that the series would be back for Season 2. In the 28-second clip, Hudson thanks everyone who watched the first season and credits fans for being the force that allowed the show to return for a second season. In making the renewal announcement, Hudson says:

A wise basketball team owner takes fan input into account, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Just like Netflix did with “Running Point,” it appears. We’re thrilled to announce that there will be a second season of the show!

Running Point’ Season 2 Plot Details

If the cliffhanger ending of Season 1 is anything to go by, family feuds may take center stage in Running Point Season 2. In the season finale, a confident and happy Isla walks into what she presumes to be her office, only to find her eldest brother Cam occupying the seat. While the duo maintain a good relationship for most of Season 1, with Cam voluntarily appointing Isla the president of the Waves in his stead, the relationship gradually sours when Isla begins to excel in her new role. With Cam even having attempted to sabotage Isla, viewers may be thrown into the thick of a power struggle when Season 2 opens.

The debut season also left off with Isla’s romantic relationship on the rocks. Lev breaks up with her, and Isla’s attempts to reconcile do not go according to plan. To make matters all the more complicated, Isla locks lips with head coach Jay Brown. With Isla in a state of confusion regarding her feelings, Season 2 will likely focus on whom Isla ends up choosing; will it be sweet and stable Lev? Or, the complicated, alluring Jay? In terms of romance, the new season may also explore Sandy’s relationship with his old boyfriend, whom he wins back at the end of Season 1. Is Sandy falling back into old habits, or will he do right by Charlie this time around?

On court, Season 1 saw the Waves experience a stunning, almost unbelievable loss despite Isla’s efforts to get the team on track. As a series centering on basketball, it is a given that the sport will be a major focus in the upcoming season. While the family and romantic narratives will no doubt play out, the Waves’ future in the sport and how they fare in upcoming games will be a definite part of Season 2’s storyline. The future of the team remains uncertain, especially given Coach Jay’s upcoming move to Boston, Travis’ time in rehab, and the possibility of another leadership change.

‘Running Point’ Season 2 Cast Details

Season 1 of Running Point has a plethora of recognizable stars, and it is likely that a good portion of the same cast will return for the series’ sophomore season. It has been confirmed that Kate Hudson will reprise her role as the titular fierce and determined Isla Gordon. After all, the continuity of the series does hinge on Isla herself. Hudson will also most likely be joined by Brenda Song in her role as Ali Lee, Isla’s best friend and chief of staff for the Los Angeles Waves. Other guaranteed returns include Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur, who play Isla’s brothers Sandy and Ness, respectively.

Viewers can also expect to see Justin Theroux return in his role as Cam, the eldest Gordon sibling. In Season 1’s cliffhanger ending, Cam makes an early return from his stint in rehab, harboring an apparent jealousy towards his sister’s success. Given this, it is highly likely that Isla’s relationship with Cam will take center stage in Running Point Season 2.

Other cast members who have a high chance of returning for the upcoming season include Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Moreno, Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield, Jay Ellis as Jay Brown and Max Greenfield as Lev Levenson. Chet Hanks may also return in his role as Travis Bugg despite entering rehab in the latter part of Season 1. No announcements regarding new additions to the cast of Season 2 have been made at the time of writing.
