On a Friday, Russell Brand made an appearance at a London court following accusations of rape, inappropriate sexual behavior, and sexual assault. He firmly denied guilt for all five charges levied against him.
Earlier this month, the initial court hearing for the embattled comedian occurred. This was due to the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service granting permission to the Metropolitan Police to indict a man, later revealed to be 49-year-old Brand, following an examination by detectives.
50-year-old Brand was accused of one crime each of rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and sexual assault, as well as two counts of sexual assault. As reported by the BBC, he denied all five charges during his court appearance at London’s Southwark Crown Court on a Friday.
Brand now faces a trial that is scheduled to start on June 3, 2026.
The offenses for which he has been indicted are associated with:
– A rape that occurred in the Bournemouth region of the U.K. back in 1999;
– An indecent assault of a woman in Westminster, London, in 2001;
– Oral rape and sexual assault of another woman in Westminster, London, in 2004;
– The sexual assault of yet another woman in Westminster between the years 2004 and 2005.
After the official announcement of the accusations against him, Brand – who converted to Christianity and was baptized following the widespread allegations – addressed these charges in a video posted on his social media, saying: “I’ve never been involved in any non-consensual behavior. I hope that by looking into my eyes, you can see this for yourself.
Investigations into the matter started in September 2023, following numerous accusations that were initially reported by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times. These reports aired serious allegations against Brand. One individual told Dispatches that Brand began a relationship with her when he was 31 and she was only 16. This relationship lasted for three months, during which time she claimed that Brand had been emotionally abusive and controlling. Another accuser alleged that Brand raped her in his L.A. home in the year 2012, as reported by The Sunday Times.
The well-known British figure firmly rejected all accusations leveled against him, stemming from the years 2006 to 2013 – a period when Brand was enjoying immense popularity through his work on Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Kings of Comedy, and Big Brother’s Celebrity Hijack. An investigation commissioned by Banijay U.K. later unearthed unstructured complaints about Brand from the set dating back over 20 years. Another review into Brand’s conduct at the BBC, specifically between 2006 and 2008 when he was associated with 6 Music and Radio 2, found that his colleagues felt he would always have his way, leading them to remain quiet about any issues.
