Anthony and Joe Russo will be making a hopefully triumphant return to the MCU as the directors of Avengers: Doomsday and
. Although it seemed for a long while that the Marvel Multiverse Saga would be coming to an end without the helmers of one of the most profitable superhero movies of all-time, now they are back with their sights set on one thing – delivering an even bigger and better experience than they did with Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame set a high bar for any superhero movie to follow, and for the MCU in particular, it has proven to be a bit of a poisoned chalice. Audience belief that the epic scale and scope of the culmination of ten years of storytelling would be carried over into the movies that followed led to a lot of disappointment. Movies like Black Widow, Thor: Love and Thunder, and The Marvels all struggled to hit the heights that were expected, but when people stopped to think about it, they were never meant to come close to the mighty Avengers movie.
As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the Russo Brothers are returning to the big screen with the aim of not just matching the epic duo of Infinity War and Endgame, but hopefully outdoing it – if such a feat is possible. In a recent chat with GameRant, the Russo Brothers expressed their confidence in crafting a film even grander than Avengers: Endgame, with Secret Wars being their chosen project. Joe Russo himself stated:
“We believe we can and will create a movie bigger than Avengers: Endgame with Secret Wars.
“Absolutely, we want to beat those younger versions of ourselves. We have to be, right? Because we have to outdo those movies in a way, or we at least have to take you on an equally engaging journey.”
Secret Wars Can Become a New Insurmountable Movie Event
In 2012, the movie “The Avengers” was released, bringing together the main team of superheroes that had been central to Marvel Studios’ extensive multi-year project. At that time, it wasn’t clear how this initial group would evolve over the ensuing years. The final chapter in this saga, “Avengers: Endgame,” featured an epic battle of superheroes, with the largest confrontation ever filmed, as the Avengers united to vanquish Thanos in a climactic showdown.
The idea of anything ever being able to deliver more spectacle than Endgame seemed ridiculous for several years, but as more and more characters from the pages of Marvel Comics have been added to the universe, there are now more pieces on the board than ever before, and with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars set to bring the Marvel Universe on a collision course with a franchise changing event, the limits of what that will look like are only as vast as the Russos’ imagination.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. The Russos are aware of the incredible challenge they have ahead of them, but they are set on making sure that whatever faults the MCU has had in recent years are all forgotten by the time the Multiverse Saga comes to an end. Whatever that turns out to look like, it is certain that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will never be the same again.
