Ryan Coogler Opens Up About Working On Black Panther 2 Without Chadwick Boseman

Initially, Chadwick Boseman first portrayed T’Challa in “Captain America: Civil War” back in 2016. Just under two years later, he returned to the role for his standalone film. Ryan Coogler helmed and co-wrote “Black Panther,” and it was intended that Boseman would continue as T’Challa following his appearances in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” However, Boseman tragically passed away in August 2020. This led to significant changes being made to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which was eventually released in November 2022 on the big screen. Now, Coogler has spoken about the emotional challenges he faced while working on the sequel as he grappled with the profound grief of losing Boseman during production.

Ryan Coogler is currently traveling to various venues to publicize his upcoming 2025 film titled “Sinners.” As he conducts interviews during this press tour, discussions about his previous works, such as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” inevitably arise. In an interview with The Guardian, Coogler opened up about how working on the sequel provided a temporary sense of solace for him and the cast and crew as they navigated the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Coogler stated that the process helped them cope with his passing.

At times, it’s comforting to have tasks at hand, which keeps you away from lingering in a gloomy state… After releasing the movie, my heart ached even more deeply because I realized all the work had been acting as a diversion, keeping me oblivious to the fact that Chad won’t create any more films.

The director of Black Panther recounted the reaction of Marvel executives as they were taken aback or surprised by Chadwick Boseman’s accent for the role of T’Challa.

Michael B. Jordan recently opened up about the lingering impact on him following Chadwick Boseman’s death, expressing his continued emotional struggle with this heavy topic.

After Chadwick Boseman’s death, it was disclosed that he had been battling stage III colon cancer since 2016 and only a handful of people outside his family were aware of his illness. This information was unknown to Ryan Coogler as he proceeded with writing the script for Black Panther 2, keeping T’Challa as the main character. In their final conversation, Coogler asked Boseman if he wished to read the completed script before receiving feedback from Marvel Studios. Tragically, Boseman passed away a few weeks afterwards.

Consequently, Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright, emerged as the main character in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” much like its predecessor, and the sequel too enjoyed both critical acclaim and commercial success. However, similar to what Ryan Coogler mentioned, wrapping up “Wakanda Forever” meant he had to confront the fact that there would be no more Chadwick Boseman-led films. “Da 5 Bloods” was his final film before his passing, while “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was released posthumously in November 2020.

If the world were ideal, Chadwick Boseman would have graced our movie screens for numerous decades more, and perhaps Ryan Coogler could have helmed some of those films. It’s difficult to fathom the anguish he felt upon hearing about his friend’s demise and coping with it. Not long ago, Coogler revealed that among the Black Panther cast, Michael B. Jordan from Sinners was most affected by Boseman’s passing.
