Ryan Murphy's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menndez Story Reveals First Teaser, Release Date

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark corners of cinematic history and the human psyche, I must say that Ryan Murphy’s latest offerings have me both intrigued and somewhat overwhelmed. The impending premiere of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” on Netflix is a testament to the enduring fascination we as an audience have with true crime narratives, particularly those that delve into the complexities of familial relationships and the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator.

Ryan Murphy and Netflix are teaming up once more, planning to air a fresh installment of the renowned anthology series “Monster” on our television sets next month, focusing this time on the Menéndez murders of 1989. A recently released teaser from the streaming service has given us a sneak peek at “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez,” along with an official release date. While the initial season delved into the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the upcoming series will delve into the lives of Lyle and Erik Menéndez, two brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez.

In the latest sneak peek, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, playing Lyle and Erik, are shown marching towards their Beverly Hills residence, each clutching a shotgun. They stride into the living room where their parents reside, followed by a deafening bang as the screen transitions to the title card. A second loud blast echoes as the release date of September 19 bursts onto the screen. Take a look at it here below.

“The prosecution asserted they were after their family wealth, but the brothers, currently serving life sentences without parole, contend that their actions were borne out of a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. The series ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story’ delves into this sensational case that captivated the world, sparked the current true crime obsession, and provokes viewers to consider: Who were the true monsters?”

From Netflix to Hulu: Ryan Murphy Is a Busy Man

Apart from “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story,” Murphy will also introduce a new horror series titled “Grotesquerie” on Hulu, starting September 25. Unlike the former, which is based on real events, the latter is purely fictional. In fact, it represents a sort of return to his roots for Murphy, who, despite having been in the industry for some time and achieving success with “Glee,” unexpectedly burst onto the scene in 2011 with the debut of the supernatural anthology series “American Horror Story.”

As a movie critic, I found striking similarities between “Grotesquerie” and some of Murphy’s earlier works, as it delves deeply into religious symbolism and follows a detective and a nun who join forces to unravel a string of gruesome occult killings. This gripping series boasts the talented Niecy Nash-Betts and Micaela Diamond in lead roles, while also introducing us to the acting debut of Travis Kelce, the celebrated football star and beau of Taylor Swift.

Over the next few days, we’ll have not one but three projects from Murphy to indulge in, as “Monsters” and “Grotesquerie” debut alongside each other, and on September 17, the new anthology series “American Sports Story” will make its premiere. This first season follows the compelling narrative of Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL player whose life saw both rise and fall.
