Ryan Reynolds Explains Why Channing Tatum Is The Perfect Gambit, Seemingly Making Case For His Scrapped Movie

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who’s seen the highs and lows of X-Men movie adaptations, I must say that Channing Tatum‘s portrayal of Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was nothing short of exhilarating! For years, we’ve heard whispers about a standalone Gambit film, only to have the project canceled and resurrected like a mutant phoenix. But with Tatum donning the iconic suit, it seems like we might finally get our wish.

Warning: SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine are ahead!

During the mid-2000s, when 20th Century Fox was one of the leading film studios and producing X-Men movies, there was approximately five years during which a standalone Gambit film was being developed. Originally portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Channing Tatum was set to replace him as the character, the Ragin’ Cajun, for this spinoff. However, with Disney purchasing Fox in 2019, the Gambit film was scrapped. Eventually, Tatum got his chance to embody Remy LeBeau through Deadpool & Wolverine, the 34th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Interestingly, less than a week after the third installment of this series was announced for release in 2024, Ryan Reynolds shared his reasons as to why Tatum is an ideal Gambit and hinted at the potential revival of the Gambit film.

Besides posting the initial images of Tatum in his Gambit costume, Reynolds took to his social media platform (previously known as Twitter) to laud the Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street star, expressing admiration by stating:

As a lifelong fan of comics, I have long been captivated by the enigmatic and charismatic character of Gambit. Having spent decades immersed in this world, I can attest to the fact that Chan was born to bring the Cajun card-slinger to life on the big screen. Like me, he dedicated a significant portion of his career to delivering an authentic adaptation of Remy LeBeau, and it shows in the passion and dedication he poured into the role.

In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Channing Tatum’s character Gambit had a significant appearance, but it would be more accurate to label his role as supportive. He teamed up with Elektra, Blade, and Laura/X-23 who were part of the resistance against Cassandra Nova in The Void. Johnny Storm/The Human Torch was also involved, but unfortunately, he met an untimely end when Deadpool revealed all the harsh words he had spoken about Cassandra Nova, as shown in the end-credits scene of “Deadpool 3.” Gambit, Elektra, Blade, and Laura joined forces with Deadpool and Wolverine to attack Cassandra’s compound, enabling the two main characters to return to Earth-1005.

Ryan Reynolds had a great time collaborating with Channing Tatum in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and he’s optimistic we might see more of this Gambit iteration. Whether his wish comes true is yet to be determined. The movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” served as a precursor for the MCU’s mutant phase, with X-Men references appearing in projects like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Ms. Marvel,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” However, an upcoming X-Men reboot written by Michael Lesslie will introduce fresh versions of these superheroes. Though Tatum’s Gambit movie never materialized, his portrayal of the character could still be considered part of the Fox era.

Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the Marvel multiverse is far from being fully explored. Now that Tatum’s Gambit has been rescued from The Void, his abilities to generate and control kinetic energy could be utilized again in future scenarios.

Until the day arrives when you can stream Deadpool and Wolverine on Disney+, you’ll have to visit your local cinema to catch Channing Tatum’s Gambit adventure. Even though 2024 is the only year that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will offer a movie in theaters, the franchise will resume on Disney+ in September with the premiere of the miniseries Agatha All Along.
