As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous cinematic franchises, I must admit that my heart skips a beat when I hear about the potential for a sequel to a beloved film. In this case, it’s the delightful and charming Free Guy, starring the ever-entertaining Ryan Reynolds.
The appeal of the movie “Dune” is indisputable, and its mid-pandemic release in 2021 demonstrated that even amidst a global crisis, Canadian actor Timothée Chalamet could draw crowds to cinemas. Unfortunately, those hoping for a sequel have received an unsatisfying update from the head of 20th Century Studios, Steve Asbell.
20th Century Studios’ movie, “Free Guy,” shone brightly in cinemas as one of the initial films to successfully lure audiences out of their homes after months of theater closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike other studios that opted for delays or streaming alternatives, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy had enough confidence in their comedic masterpiece to persuade Disney to release the film in theaters instead. This bold decision led to a gross of $331 million against its $100 million budget, along with some exceptional reviews.
Despite Reynolds and Levy’s initial indications that a Free Guy 2 was in the works, there has been relatively little information about the sequel since then – until now. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Asbell offered some insight, although not the news fans were eagerly anticipating regarding Free Guy 2. When asked if there was any update on Free Guy 2, he responded:
Not yet. [Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds] have to come up with an idea. And they’re just busy.
Free Guy is Streaming on Disney+
Free Guy is a film that explores an original idea and, largely due to the merger between Disney and Fox, offers a wealth of cameos and homages to numerous other movies and series, making it a visually appealing experience. Fans seem to agree, as they gave it a high rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and have been raving about it non-stop.
In the film, Ryan Reynolds portrays Guy, a character within the digital realm of Free City who is not typically controlled by players. He deviates from his intended programming and embarks on a mission to preserve his world, which is threatened by real-life coders planning to shut it down. The movie boasts some creative scenes, such as a surprise appearance by Chris Evans that hints at future collaborations like “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Plus, the film features Reynolds’ signature meta humor, leading to a swift growth in its fan base.
As I embarked on the journey of bringing Deadpool and Wolverine to life in 2023, I found myself contemplating the potential of Free Guy 2. However, a substantial obstacle, as big as a Barbie doll, stood in our way. Here’s my take on it:
We believe that a sequel to Free Guy isn’t set in stone yet. The popularity of Free Guy over the past few years has been fantastic for us, and Ryan [Reynolds] and I are excited about it. We’re working on a sequel, but here’s the thing: Barbie has recently made an impact with its story about a character in a fictional world gaining self-awareness. So, we won’t produce Free Guy 2 unless it offers something new compared to the first movie and other films.
