As a gamer with a keen eye for history, I can’t help but reflect on the journey of Kal Penn, a name that’s synonymous with breaking barriers and shining brightly in Hollywood. 23 years ago, he was just another struggling actor trying to make it big, facing challenges that no one should have to endure – like competing against a guy in brownface for a role.
23 years ago, Hollywood was in a significantly less diverse and inclusive phase when it came to racial representation in films. Actor Kal Penn serves as evidence of this fact. In an interview with Rolling Stone to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the beloved comedy “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” Penn opened up about the hurdles he faced as an actor of Indian descent in Hollywood, and how during his audition for his breakout role in “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder,” he was competing against a person wearing brownface.
In 2001, Penn was a relatively unknown actor with minor roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Angel, and ER. To land the part of Taj Mahal Badalandabad in Ryan Reynolds‘ comedy National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, he had to demonstrate his comedic skills despite stiff competition, even from someone donning brownface for the role. Surprisingly, it was Ryan Reynolds who recognized Penn’s talent and aided him in securing the role of the Indian exchange student struggling with women at Coolidge College.
“During the auditions for ‘Van Wilder’, Ryan was incredibly encouraging. In the last round of callbacks, I was up against another actor who had darkened his skin for the role of an Indian exchange student. Ryan asked me about my skills in improvisation and, after we improvised a scene together, it was clear he wanted me to land the part.”
In the process of producing “Van Wilder,” Reynolds mentioned that he’d share screen time with him when he landed his first leading role. This opportunity arose approximately a year later, as Penn was cast alongside John Cho in “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.” Interestingly, Reynolds took an active role in helping the film materialize.
When the events surrounding Harold & Kumar arose, particularly when the topic of cameos surfaced, I contacted Ryan. His response was swift and affirmative: “Absolutely, yes!”
In the movie, Reynolds was among the prominent guest appearances, sharing the limelight with Neil Patrick Harris who captivated each scene they graced. It was disclosed by Producer Nathan Kahane that Reynolds accepted a lower payment for his cameo in the modest independent comedy.

He continued to work consistently in both TV and film, taking films in both the comedy, drama, and horror genres. He appeared in nearly 40 episodes of the hit Fox drama House, playing Dr. Lawrence Kutner, but was written out of the show after Penn accepted an offer from President Barack Obama to be Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. He remained in that role and co-chaired Obama’s re-election campaign before returning to film and television.
