As a long-time fan of the Merc with a Mouth, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by Ryan Reynolds‘ recent statements about Deadpool 4. While it’s heartening to know that he prioritizes his family and doesn’t want to miss out on precious moments with his kids, it’s also a bit disheartening to think that we might not see more of my favorite anti-hero soon.
Andrew Garfield hinted in a recent Variety interview that Deadpool 4 might never materialize. During their discussion for the debut episode of the new season, the conversation naturally turned to Ryan Reynolds’ possible future as Deadpool. Despite the immense popularity of Deadpool, it appears that the character may not return to the big screen in his own movie anytime soon.
Although Kevin Feige has expressed enthusiasm about bringing Deadpool and Wolverine back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) promptly, Ryan Reynolds suggests that it’s not that straightforward, and he isn’t overly optimistic about another Deadpool film.
GARFIELD: What does the future hold for the [Deadpool] franchise?
REYNOLDS: To be honest, I think the character is quite effective in two aspects. One is its rarity and unexpectedness. It’s been six years since the last installment, and a big part of that is because it consumes my entire life. I have four children, and I never want to be an absent father. It hurts me deeply when I miss their sports events or special moments. As for the future of “Deadpool,” I can’t predict, but I do know that we made this movie as a standalone experience, not just a teaser for another one.
Ryan Reynolds Suggests Deadpool is Not a Main Character
Marvel Studios is recognized for producing films that serve as preludes to others, particularly through their post-credit sequences. For Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool isn’t a character he believes can be reprised in another standalone film, but there’s a possibility he could appear in someone else’s project instead.
I view Deadpool primarily as a sidekick rather than the main character, often placing him at the center for audience demand, but it’s only effective when everything else is stripped away. I feel I may not have the ability to make him an underdog again in his own movie, so if he appears next, it will likely be in another film, such as one starring Channing Tatum (who’s eager to play Gambit). I’d be just as content playing a supporting role in his or anyone else’s movie.
Back in the day, the notion of Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine across various versions seemed far-fetched, but who knows what tomorrow may bring? As for Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has hinted that he won’t resurrect the character unless he has a compelling story to tell. Admittedly, this might seem a bit disheartening, but it’s always better to leave them yearning for more rather than overstaying our welcome.
