As a movie buff who has spent countless hours in dark theaters, I wholeheartedly agree with Ryan Reynolds’ sentiments about Eddie Murphy’s overlooked performance in “The Nutty Professor.” The man was a one-man show, juggling seven roles with such finesse that it left me in stitches. It’s a shame the Academy missed out on recognizing this gem of a film.
Ryan Reynolds believes that Eddie Murphy’s comedic role in “The Nutty Professor” was underappreciated by the Academy. During a recent interview on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, Reynolds voiced his opinion that Murphy not being nominated for an Oscar for his multi-character performance in “The Nutty Professor” is one of the most significant oversights in Academy history. When asked to name the biggest Oscars snub ever, Reynolds pointed to this instance as his top pick.
“One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn’t have an Oscar for ‘The Nutty Professor.'”
As a fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the comedic masterpiece, “The Nutty Professor,” directed by Tom Shadyac in 1996. This film is actually a remake of the 1963 movie with Jerry Lewis, but Eddie Murphy takes it to a whole new level! He brilliantly portrays no less than seven characters, including Professor Sherman Klump and his captivating yet mischievous alter ego, Buddy Love. Critics adored Murphy’s side-splitting performances, as evident by the film’s 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although its sequel, “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” directed by Peter Segal, didn’t quite reach the same level of popularity, it’s still a must-watch for any Eddie Murphy fan like me!
In my humble opinion, Eddie Murphy’s transformative role in the film “The Nutty Professor” garnered him a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. However, it was Tom Cruise who took home the award that year for his performance in “Jerry Maguire.” Interestingly, the 1997 Oscar race for Best Actor saw a focus on dramatic performances, with Geoffrey Rush for “Shine,” Billy Bob Thornton for “Sling Blade,” Peter Fonda for “Ulee’s Gold,” and Matt Damon for “Good Will Hunting” leading the pack. Cruise was the only comedic actor to be recognized in this category. Notably, “The Nutty Professor” won the Best Makeup Award that year, while Geoffrey Rush took home the Best Actor statue. Fast forward to 2006, and Murphy earned an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as James “Thunder” Early in “Dreamgirls.
Will We See Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Team Up as Oscars Hosts?
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the Oscars! If given the chance, I’d absolutely love to co-host with my buddy and fellow superhero, Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside me in Deadpool and Wolverine. Although the timing isn’t ideal right now, I truly hope we can make it happen someday. The chemistry we share on screen, mirroring our real-life friendship, is one of the best aspects of that Marvel film. Fingers crossed for a future collaboration!
As a cinephile, it’s a cherished dream of mine to be part of such a project someday. Yet, I’m crafting a film script, one that could potentially star the talented Hugh Jackman and the brilliant Shawn Levy – but let’s make it clear, this is not a Marvel production. That’s all for now.
It’s not clear which film Reynolds is referring to, but we do know he’s working with Levy on two upcoming projects. One of them is an untitled comedy heist movie that’s being compared to “Ocean’s Eleven” in terms of ensemble cast and Netflix release. The other project is titled “Boy Band,” which Levy is directing, and Reynolds is co-writing. This project is currently in pre-production, but its plot details are not yet disclosed.
Here’s Deadpool and Wolverine now up for grabs for purchase, and they’ll make their Disney+ debut on November 12th. Most recently, Murphy donned Axel Foley’s hat once more for Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” and he’s all set to reappear as a beloved character in the 2026 release of “Shrek 5.” The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will be unveiled on Friday, January 17, 2025, with the awards ceremony scheduled for March 2.
