S.W.A.T. EP Shares Latest Update On Season 9’s Chances, And I’m Optimistic

Despite the fact that “S.W.A.T.” fans are yet to see the return of Season 8 on January 31, 2025, as per the current TV schedule, it’s always wise to ponder over its upcoming seasons. The CBS series has managed to dodge cancellation not just once, but twice within a short span of time, suggesting that network executives are keen on keeping it running. With Season 8 receiving a complete 22-episode order, which is becoming increasingly uncommon these days, executive producer Shawn Ryan has provided an update about the possibility of Season 9. I remain cautiously optimistic regarding its prospects.

Initially, when it was announced that S.W.A.T. would conclude after its sixth season, fans and stars like Shemar Moore were displeased. However, within a short span of time, CBS and Sony Television came to an agreement for a 13-episode final season for the series, while Moore remained hopeful about Season 8. Surprisingly, a month before what was supposed to be the series finale, CBS unexpectedly issued a renewal order. Could this unexpected renewal occur again?

Shawn Ryan, a key figure in creating the TV show “S.W.A.T.“, shared with Deadline that attracting viewers, including executives, poses no challenge for the series. However, it’s the fanbase, not their numbers, that raises concerns.

1. The program seems to be cherished by CBS executives, and our audience adores it as well.

2. Since I passed on the showrunner responsibilities to Andy Dettman, creatively speaking, I must admit I’m both pleased and a bit ashamed to say that the show hasn’t faltered one bit. However, we are aware of the ongoing corporate transformations within the industry.

3. I have worked with David Ellison in the past, having written a movie for him.

Regardless of the public uproar over the cancellations, it’s likely that CBS wouldn’t have renewed S.W.A.T. if it wasn’t well-liked within the network. In fact, CBS President Amy Reisenbach has openly expressed her personal fondness for the show. However, even though knowing those in charge support the product provides some comfort, there’s one crucial factor that continues to cause concern, and it’s why we can’t be certain about a Season 9 for the 20-Squad.

Skydance is in the process of acquiring CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global. This means that changes are on the horizon for all the brands under its umbrella, including the Eye Network. The acquisition could potentially make things a bit more complex when it comes to renewals, but Ryan remains optimistic, expressing confidence in the future whether or not the shows get renewed, and encouraging fans to keep watching.

I’m not sure about the details of the plans for renewal. The criteria for this year might differ significantly from previous years. It’s unclear whether producing the series at an external studio will be beneficial or detrimental. Economics could influence things, so everything is uncertain right now. However, we’ll keep working hard to create a show our audience enjoys, and we’ll see how it unfolds. This has been our approach for the last few seasons, and we’re extremely proud of the series’ history.

Just as with any TV show waiting for renewal, there’s a lot of anxious anticipation about whether S.W.A.T. will return for another season or not. Given its successful history, it has a good chance of being renewed, either by CBS or another network. However, the future is still uncertain and we don’t know when a decision might be made. Ideally, it will happen soon.

In the interim, fans can catch up with their favorite show, “S.W.A.T.”, this coming Friday as it resumes after a break. Shemar Moore has been sharing pictures of his daughter in the meantime, keeping viewers entertained. With plenty more episodes to anticipate and possible appearances by former cast members, it’s definitely worth tuning in – especially if you crave more of “S.W.A.T.” The show will air on CBS at 10 p.m. ET this Friday, January 31, with the following day’s streaming available for Paramount+ subscribers.
