Saber Interactive Confirms Knights of the Old Republic Remake is NOT Canceled

In the year 2021, it was revealed that a new version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was in development. However, due to a prolonged silence on updates, many enthusiasts speculated that the game might have been scrapped, like numerous others.

Unlike Star Wars: Hunters though, that doesn’t seem to be the case. As it turns out, the KOTOR remake is very much alive, and a dev working on the game just gave a rather vague but positive update.

The KOTOR Remake is NOT Canceled

In April 2024, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch confirmed that the Knights of the Old Republic remake is still being developed. However, he did not provide any specific details about the project in a recent interview with Game File (via VGC).

Tim Willits, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Chief Creative Officer, confirmed on social media that a few games they announced over the past year, such as the one based on The Old Republic, are still being actively developed.

It has been determined that Disney is taking charge of Star Wars announcements, as Saber acknowledges that Disney is privy to the secrets of the Lucasfilm brand and likely knows the optimal time to share updates with fans.

The Original KOTOR

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic originally came out back in 2003 and was playable for PC and the original Xbox. The story was set 4000 years before the events of the original Star Wars and had a heavy emphasis on player choices and their consequences.

The original protagonist for the first game was Revan, and players would progress through the game by choosing whether Revan would fall to the Dark Side or stick true to his Jedi path.

Besides allowing players to build their characters and grow their Force powers, the game also comes with several other characters for players to team up with, from other saber wielders to Han Solo scoundrel types.

The game is regarded by a lot of longtime fans as one of the best Star Wars games of all time, and before The Acolyte, there were a lot of calls for Lucasfilm to keep exploring the Old Republic era of the lore; too bad they canceled that series though.

What Do Fans Want from the KOTOR Remake?

It’s unclear what exactly a KOTOR remake will look like with the modern gen, but some are hopeful that the game will have an FFVII Remake-level update, with a whole new system and fighting mechanic.

That being said, there are a bunch of characters from the game that a lot of players have grown to love, and it will be up to the story writers to make sure they find a great balance of adding new things to the story while keeping to the core of the original game.

The Knights of the Old Republic remake’s release date is still undetermined, but it’s expected that significant updates and possibly some big announcements will be made during Star Wars Celebration in April 2025. So, fans are encouraged to keep an eye on that event.
