As a fan of Sabrina Carpenter, it’s truly inspiring to see how she has grown and evolved as an artist over the years. From her humble beginnings on Disney Channel to her current status as a multi-talented pop sensation, Sabrina has consistently shown that she is not afraid to take risks and push boundaries.
What I find most impressive about Sabrina’s journey is how she has managed to stay true to herself while still being open to new experiences and collaborations. Whether it’s working with a tailor to find clothes that fit her perfectly or reaching out to her friends and idols for guest appearances on her Christmas special, Sabrina always seems to have a clear vision of who she is and what she wants to achieve.
One thing that really sets Sabrina apart from other artists is her sense of humor. From the playful banter with her guests on her Christmas special to the self-deprecating jokes she often shares on social media, Sabrina’s ability to find humor in even the most challenging situations is truly endearing.
As for what the future holds for Sabrina Carpenter, I have no doubt that it will be filled with even more incredible music, acting projects, and fashion collaborations. Whether she’s on stage or on screen, Sabrina has a unique ability to captivate audiences and leave us wanting more.
And as for me, well, I’ll just keep waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for her next album, because who knows, maybe one day she’ll invite me to be a guest on her Christmas special too! (Just kidding, Sabrina. Or am I?)
Sabrina Carpenter might not have foreseen the incredible success her coffee-themed song would achieve, ever since its release in April.
When the Grammy-nominated musician opted to debut “Espresso” prior to the summer, she felt that since it was primarily a fall drink, it might not stand out amidst the commotion due to this reason.
She confesses to The Hollywood Reporter exclusively that she wasn’t certain if the song would resonate with others, yet the emotion, melody, and unwavering spirit it embodied were beliefs she strongly held. In truth, she never anticipated anyone else would appreciate it, but her own fondness for it was what truly mattered to her at the time, a sentiment she often reminds herself of.
The song was the most-played track of the year on Spotify, amassing over 1.6 billion listens. It was satirized on Saturday Night Live in a popular sketch, featuring Marcello Hernández’s Domingo, which has since gained over 15 million views on YouTube. Additionally, “Espresso” sparked Carpenter’s latest collaboration with Dunkin’, resulting in the creation of Sabrina’s Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso.
As a die-hard fan, I eagerly anticipate this upcoming collaboration with my favorite artist. She’s aiming to craft unique experiences for us that go beyond the ordinary, all while keeping her bubbly personality intact.
Given the current state of the world, people seem to value connections even more deeply, as they’re becoming increasingly scarce,” she notes. “Having opportunities to feel connected with those we care about is truly precious, I believe. In my case, when I can’t travel personally to every city, it’s all about forming collaborations like this one that can bring me directly to your home or the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts, or wherever works best for you.
She comments, “This is undeniably the best way for me to wrap up the year, and an ideal method to celebrate a tune that just won’t leave my head. We can discuss further when it’s no longer around, but for now, I’m thrilled that people are still appreciating the humor in the song and eager about the drink.
In the interview below, Carpenter discusses her upcoming Netflix Christmas special titled “A Nonsense Christmas,” her wardrobe selections, as well as her possible future projects in music.
Talk to me about this Dunkin’ partnership. How did it come about?
Being a lifelong resident of the East Coast, Dunkin’ Donuts was essentially a big part of my upbringing and continues to be an integral part of my adult life as well. It seemed like a logical choice for many reasons. I have a song titled “Espresso,” and when they reached out to me about it, I began to see that the opportunity for a coffee collaboration was dwindling, and I hadn’t seized it yet. There were some initial sparks with the song’s release, but nothing truly memorable or distinctive. This drink holds such a special place in my heart, and they have been incredibly helpful in realizing the vision for “Espresso” and maintaining its essence, which has made the collaboration enjoyable.
How did you all come up with the vision that you all wanted to present to people?
For me, the playful vibe running throughout my album has been incredibly significant, along with its light-hearted tone, and I’ve noticed numerous campaigns successfully pulling off that humorous approach. I wanted Dave Myers involved because he’s one of my top choices, a trusted director who consistently understands my vision and knows how to translate it flawlessly. Moreover, he’s skilled at integrating my personality into every aspect of my work, so having him on board made me incredibly joyful, as he truly is exceptional.
I value the fun and lighthearted feel in my album, and I’ve seen other campaigns do it humorously well. Dave Myers is a favorite director who always gets my vision right and adds my personality to everything we create together. Having him on board made me really happy because he’s fantastic at what he does.
So, you touched on this a little bit, but how has it been working with Dunkin’ on this?
They are simply extraordinary partners, and their global reach is undeniable. For me, maintaining connections with my fans when physical proximity isn’t possible is always a top priority. This partnership allows me to do that, essentially following them wherever they go, ideally in a positive manner. This aligns perfectly with the spirit of “Espresso,” a song that has brought me joy for numerous reasons. However, one of the main reasons I cherish it is because it encourages unexpected collaborations and opportunities to lighten up. The partnership itself is playful and highly productive. I’m thrilled to see my fans sharing photos with it, creating memories together in a way that feels special to me.
It’s truly heartwarming to witness the enthusiasm of my fans when they speculate about potential collaborations, even if it’s just a teaser from Dunkin’. Knowing that people get excited over things associated with me is such a humbling experience, reminding me of how deeply my work resonates with them. It’s a testament to the power of creativity and connection, and I feel incredibly grateful for this unique bond we share.
In today’s world, I believe people value connections more than ever before since they are becoming increasingly scarce. The joy of staying connected with our loved ones is truly precious to me. When I’m not touring and can’t visit every city personally, partnerships like this one help bridge the gap by bringing me closer to you, whether that’s your home or the nearest Dunkin’. I’m thrilled that everything worked out so well. This collaboration is the perfect way for me to wrap up the year, a fantastic opportunity to share this song that continues to resonate with listeners. (Laughs) Eventually, when the song fades away, we can discuss it further. But for now, I’m overjoyed that people are still finding humor in the song and enjoying the connection through the drink.
Having spent countless mornings sipping coffee at Dunkin’, I can confidently say that I have a few suggestions for some refreshing new beverages to help keep customers cool this summer and cozy during the fall. In the heat of the summer, perhaps we could introduce a Mango Pineapple Refresher or a Watermelon Coolatta? And as the leaves start changing colors in the fall, I think a Pumpkin Spice Latte or an Apple Cider Donut Coffee would be a perfect addition to the menu. What are your thoughts?
It seems quite likely, as they’ve been incredibly open and communicative. This suggests a wide range of possibilities could be on the table.
You said that “Espresso” is still around, and I’m really glad about that. In fact, it was my top track in my Spotify Year in Review.
Are you serious? (Laughs)
Yes. I knew I had listened to it a lot, but I didn’t realize I had listened to it that much.
As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of writing and storytelling, I must say that your words have left a profound impression on me. The way you described that situation was so captivating that it felt like an unexpected twist in my own life narrative. It’s not often that a piece of writing resonates with me as deeply as this one did.
I find it fascinating how something I wrote, without any intention or planning, could have such an impact on another person. It’s almost serendipitous, like the universe conspired to bring our stories together in this unique way. Your repeated readings of my work have not gone unnoticed and I am truly grateful for your dedication.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my words, even if it was unintentional on your part. It means a great deal to me as a writer to know that my stories can touch people in such a meaningful way.
Was it predictable that “Espresso” would gain such a significant popularity with its impact on espresso martinis, Saturday Night Live skit, and the introduction of your new perfume, to name just a few examples, when it was released earlier this year?
As a musician who’s been in the industry for quite some time now, I’ve learned that sometimes releasing a song can be an unpredictable endeavor. I remember clearly putting out this particular track at the start of summer, thinking it might not connect because coffee, to me, is more of a fall beverage. Yet, the sentiment and sound of the song, along with its confident vibe, were something I truly believed in. In truth, I had no idea if anyone else would enjoy it, but I liked it, and that was all that mattered to me at that moment. This experience has taught me a valuable lesson: always trust your instincts and never underestimate the power of believing in yourself.
After a delightfully festive and jam-packed month, working on the Nonsense Christmas special for Netflix has been quite an extraordinary journey for me. The experience of bringing this magical tale to life has been truly enchanting, filled with laughter, creative energy, and a deep sense of satisfaction. It’s not every day that one gets to be part of such a heartwarming production during the holiday season. I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait for everyone to see it!
What I experienced was strikingly similar to something I’ve longed for. You might find it odd, but growing up, I was captivated by shows like Cher, Dolly Parton, and Lucille Ball, and these extraordinary talents have greatly influenced me. When the notion arose to create my own Christmas special, I was overjoyed and seized the chance without hesitation. Time wasn’t on my side, but I passionately yearned for it to reflect my personality and visually resonate with the things that inspire me. Therefore, I’m immensely pleased and thankful for the guests who graced the special, as they truly made it extraordinary. Looking forward, I’m eager to explore ways to continue my holiday tradition over the years, and I believe this was a promising beginning.
You spoke about all the guest appearances. They were absolutely amazing! From one side to another, there were a variety of individuals. Can you share some insights on how these collaborations took place?
Or:
You talked about your many guest spots. They were fantastic! There was quite the mix of people around. Mind telling us a bit about how those opportunities came about?
Many of the collaborations I’ve had lately felt more like text exchanges. Over the past couple of years, particularly recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with an array of artists, writers, actors, and comedians who genuinely inspire me. Some were people I knew before, while others were new acquaintances I was eager to collaborate with. A good number of these connections were organic; I’d exchange a few messages here and there, and that’s essentially how things developed. As I mentioned earlier, the process was as playful as we intended it to be. My goal for every guest involved in this project was to ensure they had an enjoyable experience during production too.
I’m really impressed by your unique stage presence during the show and overall. Could you share the process behind choosing the visual aesthetic and theme for your special, as well as for your tours?
As a fashion enthusiast, I’ve always found myself drawn to garments that flatter my figure, serving as the foundation for my style journey. A pivotal moment came when I encountered an exceptional tailor, whose craftsmanship transformed my wardrobe and, in turn, significantly impacted my life.
In my younger years, I confess that I occasionally made fashion choices that didn’t quite align with my age – either striving to emulate a more mature look or attempting to appear younger than I was. However, it wasn’t until I discovered the power of fit that I truly felt like I was expressing myself through clothing.
Being petite, I often found inspiration in outfits I would modify by shortening dresses, resulting in pieces that perfectly complemented my stature. This realization marked the beginning of a style evolution, one that led me to work with my stylist, Jared [Ellner]. Together, we’ve created a partnership based on mutual understanding and a shared vision for my aesthetic.
Jared has an uncanny ability to anticipate my needs and preferences, tailoring his choices to fit my specific measurements, cuts, and styles that are both practical and eye-catching – not to mention effortlessly interchangeable. And of course, he’s always ready to incorporate a dash of sparkle!
Sabrina Carpenter, with your international tour’s next leg approaching, have you begun work on a new album? Are there any plans brewing in the realm of music or acting for your upcoming projects? What can we expect from Sabrina Carpenter in the future?
As for you, it’s ultimately your decision or destiny’s call. However, I’m someone who tends to ponder about the future, particularly a year ahead. While creating “Short n’ Sweet”, I began contemplating its aftermath, but I won’t reveal more at this moment. Yet, I must say I’m eager for the upcoming year as it provides an opportunity for growth and fun without being overly serious, which is my intention.
