As a seasoned gamer who has seen countless music awards shows unfold over the years, I must say that the upcoming Grammy nominations are shaping up to be quite the spectacle. The prospect of Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter battling it out in separate categories is already tantalizing enough, but throw in a potential best country album nod for Queen B and things get even more intriguing.
It’s a yee-haw for Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter at the Grammys.
According to a source, Beyoncé’s recent album titled “Cowboy Carter” is set to vie for the Best Country Album award, while Carpenter, who gained fame as a pop star following the release of her sixth album this year, has been nominated for the Best New Artist category.
Last week, the Recording Academy convened its selection committee meeting to decide the competition categories for albums and songs, as well as identifying potential nominees for the Best New Artist award. Notably, Carpenter and Chappell Roan are currently leading contenders in this category. Throughout its history, the academy has continually revised the rules for Best New Artist to adapt to the evolving music industry. In previous years, changes were made due to limitations on the number of songs and albums, which disqualified some artists.
25-year-old carpenter has been ruling the music charts with her songs “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste.” These tracks have spent their fifth consecutive week in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first woman ever to accomplish this feat in the chart’s 66-year history. Her album, Short n’ Sweet, has already gone platinum and she’s currently on a sold-out tour.
Among the potential nominees for the category of Best New Artist are Shaboozey, Benson Boone, Teddy Swims, and Megan Moroney. The initial round of Grammy voting commences on Friday and runs until October 15th. The nominations will be revealed on November 8th, followed by a second round of voting from December 12th, 2024 to January 3rd, 2025. The award ceremony is scheduled to broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 2nd, 2025.
Beyoncé has finally submitted a song for consideration as the best country album, seven years after the academy’s country committee turned down her twangy track “Daddy Lessons” from the 2016 album “Lemonade”. Just last month, she faced a significant lack of recognition at the Country Music Association Awards, where she received no nominations for “Cowboy Carter” and its hit single “Texas Hold ‘Em”. In addition, she failed to win in any of the 17 categories she was nominated for at the recent People’s Choice Country Awards.
Should Beyoncé, the record-breaking Grammy artist, receive a nomination for Best Country Album, it would mark her debut in this genre and an unusual feat as she would join the select few who have been nominated across various genres at the Grammys. In 2017, Beyoncé made history by being the first artist to secure nominations in rock, rap, R&B, and pop categories during the same year with her album Lemonade.
At its evaluation session, the academy invites approximately 350 music industry volunteers to assist in deciding where an album or song belongs. Occasionally, matters can become complex when a piece has a blend of genres and could suit several categories. For instance, during the 2023 Grammys, they debated whether Beyoncé’s Renaissance should remain in the dance genre or not, but it did, eventually winning in that category.
Occasionally, decisions made can become contentious. For instance, Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Super Freaky Girl” was moved from rap to pop, an action she publicly criticized on social media. Similarly, Kacey Musgraves’ album Star-Crossed and Brandi Carlile’s “Right on Time” were also reassigned to the pop genre, a decision they didn’t approve of. Notably, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis experienced a similar fate when they initially were removed from rap during their breakthrough with hits like “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us.” However, the academy’s National Screening Committee later reversed this decision, allowing them to remain in rap. This move sparked considerable debate about the Grammys and its awarding process.
Cowboy Carter, featuring collaborations with Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Linda Martell, Miley Cyrus, and Post Malone, sparked significant discussions about Black artists reclaiming genres they originated, such as country music. Additionally, it provided a platform for emerging country acts like Shaboozey, who featured on two Cowboy Carter tracks, and gained substantial success with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – the longest-running number one song of the year – due to increased exposure courtesy of Beyoncé.
Contenders for the title of “Best Country Album,” potentially rivaling Beyoncé, encompass a diverse group such as Post Malone, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Zach Bryan, and Moroney.
Beyoncé has amassed 32 Grammy Awards across various categories, such as R&B (with 21 wins), rap (three wins), dance (two wins), and best music video (two awards). Interestingly, her only major category win was for “Single Ladies” in the song of the year category. Other accolades she’s received include best female pop vocal performance, best music film, and best surround sound album. It is anticipated that Cowboy Carter will secure a nomination for the prestigious award, album of the year, which would be Beyonce’s fifth time competing in this category.
