On the 16th of January, I found myself in an unfortunate incident where I was stabbed multiple times during an attempted robbery at my residence in Bandra. Currently, I am undergoing treatment at Lilavati Hospital. In a significant development, Mumbai police apprehended the suspect, Mohammed Shehzad, early Sunday morning in Thane. It turns out that this individual, who hails from Bangladesh, had entered India illegally. Here’s how the diligent work of Mumbai police led to the capture of the Bangladeshi resident behind this attack.
According to an article published by India Today, the individual believed to have committed the stabbing incident involving Saif Ali Khan was apprehended on Sunday morning, hidden within the dense mangrove woods of Thane.
As I stood before the officers, I asserted that I hailed from the vibrant heartlands of West Bengal. Yet, when pressed for particulars about my home or recent whereabouts, I found myself at a loss for words. My responses seemed to dance around the truth like a jittery leaf in the wind, and it was this inconsistency that sparked suspicion. The authorities began to suspect that perhaps I had slipped into India clandestinely from our neighboring Bangladesh. Their suspicions were eventually validated when I reluctantly confessed to having made the illegal border-crossing a good seven months prior.
After a thorough probe, it was found that his authentic birth certificate, hidden away in Jhalokathi district of Bangladesh, was discovered. This document was acquired by the police following Shariful’s contact with his brother. Subsequently, Shariful faced charges under both the Foreigners Act and Passport Act.
As per the authorities’ report, Shariful had initially thought about getting an Indian passport, but eventually decided against it. He admitted to trying to earn money in various ways prior to his return to Bangladesh.
Initially, the police held several possible suspects after reviewing CCTV recordings near Saif Ali Khan’s home, but no substantial clues emerged. On re-examination of the footage, they noticed someone, later identified as Shariful, passing through Bandra railway station at around 7 a.m. on January 16, dressed in attire different from his usual clothing.
In a different part of town, Shariful, who worked at a local pub in Worli, sought temporary work before moving to Thane. Despite making efforts to avoid capture, Shariful was eventually traced due to a distinctive backpack he carried following the incident. The police used CCTV footage, along with a Google Pay transaction for breakfast purchase, which aided in pinpointing his location and ultimately resulted in his apprehension.
Investigating his location by tracking his mobile number through the contractor led the police to the thick mangrove forests of Thane. It was later verified that Shariful had entered Saif’s home in Bandra around 2:30 a.m. on January 16, with the intention of burglary.
The individual in question has been temporarily held by police for a period of five days, and they are being brought up on charges that involve several sections of the Indian Penal Code. Among these charges are section 311, which pertains to robbery or dacoity with the intention of inflicting serious injury or death, as well as section 331(4), relating to house-breaking, and other associated offenses.
Responding to those accusations, I, as a steadfast defender, contested the statements about Shariful’s citizenship. I emphasized that he has resided in Mumbai with his family for more than seven years and refuted the charge that he had just entered India from Bangladesh recently.
It came to light that he had an unexpected past as a high-ranking wrestler in Bangladesh. In questioning, Shehzad admitted to his wrestling history, leading investigators to believe this athletic background might explain how he managed to subdue Saif and others during the assault.
Further investigations revealed that Shehzad was implicated in a different robbery several months prior, while working at a pub in Worli. The incident involved him allegedly stealing a diamond ring, leading to his dismissal. Subsequently, he held a temporary position at a restaurant in Thane until December 2024.
