As a seasoned actor with a wealth of experience spanning over three decades, I find myself reflecting upon Saif Ali Khan‘s recent statements at the India Today Conclave. The man behind Raavan in Adipurush and Devara, among many other iconic roles, seems to be grappling with the fine line between artistic expression and societal sensitivities.
Saif Ali Khan portrayed Ravana in the film Adipurush, alongside Kriti Sanon and Prabhas. Directed by Om Raut, this production faced criticism for its perceived distortion of mythological characters. In response, Saif Ali Khan stated that he hasn’t quite pinpointed the actual issue yet, but he understands what types of roles he should steer clear from in future projects.
During a recent conversation at the India Today Conclave, Saif Ali Khan was questioned about the backlash and legal issues surrounding him and director Om Raut’s film, Adipurush. The actor expressed that such incidents were somewhat disconcerting, and reminisced about a court verdict where an actor is deemed accountable for his on-screen dialogue.
He went on to voice doubts about the extent of the issue, saying, “I’m unsure if it’s truly a significant problem. I realize many people are restricted in their expressions and actions. To some degree, we all need to exercise self-restraint and be cautious; otherwise, there might be complications.
The Devara performer emphasized that although discussing such topics as religion may be uncomfortable, it serves as a reminder of their boundaries. He maintained that although they have numerous tales to share, their intention is not to stir up conflict.
Apart from this, Saif’s portrayal of a politician in the Amazon Prime Video show, Tandav, received substantial backlash. Interestingly, the actor mentioned that he came very close to being “cancelled” due to his role in the series.
Referencing that occurrence, he commented, “From that experience, I’ve come to realize that I wouldn’t…if someone were to inquire, ‘Should I repeat this job given what I now know?’ I would respond, ‘No, it’s inviting potential problems.’ Moreover, I’m fortunate to receive numerous job offers and acknowledge steering clear of problematic areas.
To wrap it up, Saif emphasized that their role is uniting everyone across different social groups, regardless of their caste or religion.
Here I am, absolutely thrilled! Right now, I’m basking in the glory of my South debut film, Devara Part 1, where Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor shine brightly in the limelight. And guess what? There’s more to come! I’ve got Race 4 lined up with none other than Sidharth Malhotra. Can’t wait to see what magic we create together on the big screen!
