Netflix is completely invested in its new anime venture, and its latest sensation, the action-packed series Sakamoto Days, has fans hooked. This show, inspired by Yuto Suzuki’s manga of the same name, represents Netflix’s latest original anime production. The premiere aired on January 11, with new episodes dropping every Saturday at 9 a.m. ET. With each passing week, more and more viewers are tuning in, making Sakamoto Days the highly anticipated Shōnen hit of the Winter 2025 season – even those who aren’t regular anime watchers are getting drawn into it.
The anime series “Sakamoto Days” has surged into Netflix’s top 3 most-watched shows this week, moving ahead of titles like “XO, Kitty,” “Squid Game” Season 2, and even the violent Western series “American Primeval.” Interestingly, another anime, “Castlevania: Nocturne” Season 2, also finds itself in the top 10.
In the series Sakamoto Days, we find a storyline reminiscent of that in John Wick. After living as an infamous assassin for numerous years, Taro Sakamoto finds love and decides to hang up his killing tools. However, a brush with the underworld mob triggers events that force him out of retirement when a staggering 1 billion yen bounty is placed on his head, attracting assassins worldwide. Unlike John Wick, who has on-screen credited for 439 deaths, Taro Sakamoto vowed to his spouse that he would no longer take lives. Consequently, he must creatively employ non-lethal methods to dispose of the assassins, leading to some amusing and intricately designed action sequences. The show’s summary goes as follows:
Sakamoto Days: A story that shares a resemblance with John Wick. After years as an infamous hitman, Taro Sakamoto discovers love and decides to abandon his lethal career. However, a run-in with the mob sets off a chain of events forcing him out of retirement when a 1 billion yen bounty is placed on his head, drawing assassins from all over. Unlike John Wick, Taro Sakamoto has promised his wife he would no longer kill, leading to him using non-lethal tactics for self-defense, resulting in some humorous and masterfully choreographed action scenes.
Taro Sakamoto, once a professional assassin, decides to step away from that life due to love. However, when his old life comes back to haunt him, he finds himself compelled to battle in order to safeguard his cherished family.
Not Just ‘Sakamoto Days,’ Netflix Is Embracing Anime
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming winter season on Netflix! While Sakamoto Days has certainly caught my eye, it’s not the only new anime series gracing our screens. The second season of the smash-hit romance series, The Apothecary Diaries, is currently unfolding, leaving fans eager for more. Simultaneously, the second part of the sports-centered high school romance, Blue Box, continues to captivate viewers with its heartrending narrative. In late 2024, Netflix even collaborated with Crunchyroll to co-distribute the year’s most talked-about series, Dandadan. It seems that Netflix is fully committed to the anime world, and they’re not stopping there – they’re also working on live-action adaptations of beloved titles like One Piece, keeping us eagerly awaiting each new release!
Besides the latest series, Netflix has been enriching its collection with classic anime from the past. This month alone, it added the 2023 reboot of the iconic samurai anime “Rurouni Kenshin” and the sequel series to the best boxing anime ever made, “Hajime no Ippo”. Over the last few years, Netflix has also acquired popular anime series such as “My Hero Academia”, “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Vinland Saga”, “Demon Slayer”, “One Punch Man”, and “Mob Psycho”. To top it off, almost the entire Studio Ghibli library is accessible on Netflix.
