Sally Field Shares “Horrific” Story of Illegal Abortion as Reason to Support Kamala Harris: “We Can’t Go Back”

As a long-time fan of Sally Field, it is both heartbreaking and inspiring to hear her story about the illegal abortion she had to undergo at such a young age. Her courage to share this deeply personal and traumatic experience speaks volumes about her strength and determination.

Sally Field openly discusses her “troublesome experience,” which was an illegal abortion she had when she was 17 years old, prior to the historic ruling in Roe v. Wade regarding reproductive rights.

In a video shared on Instagram over the weekend, the two-time Oscar winner expressed her support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, a Democratic presidential ticket she has endorsed. She also advocated for other candidates and ballot measures that could safeguard reproductive rights, as stated in the caption of the video.

And then, in all caps, she writes, “PLEASE. WE CAN’T GO BACK!!”

In that video, I share my emotions and experiences when I discovered, at a tender age, that I was expecting a child.

She shared that her life’s path wasn’t one of choice; her family support and financial resources were limited. Despite graduating from high school, no one suggested the idea of college to her. Nothing was said about it. She didn’t have a clear idea of what she wanted for herself. That was until she discovered she was pregnant.

Field initially expressed, “I’m deeply embarrassed by it because I was brought up in the ’50s, so it’s something deeply engrained in me.

In the description below the video, she expressed her reluctance, saying she had been “afraid to share, to reveal the terrible events that happened to me.

She mentioned that it was an era far more challenging than the present, one where birth control wasn’t easily accessible except for those who were already married.

In the video, Field said a family friend, who was a doctor, drove her and her mother to Tijuana.

She explained that we pulled over on a run-down street which seemed quite intimidating. He parked several blocks away and pointed to a structure in the distance, saying, ‘That’s the building over there.’ He handed me an envelope filled with money, instructing me to enter that building, hand over the cash, and then return to him immediately.

During the procedure, she didn’t receive any anesthetic, Field noted. However, she explained that a technician provided occasional puffs of ether, only to then withdraw it. This caused her arms and legs to feel numb and peculiar, yet she felt every sensation – the intensity of the pain she was experiencing.

Yet, she soon understood that the technician was inappropriately touching her, leading her to ponder desperately on ways to free herself. This left her with a profound sense of embarrassment and humiliation.

She added, “Afterward, they exclaimed, ‘Hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry!’ as if the structure were ablaze. It seemed I wasn’t supposed to be around, since what they were doing was against the law.

According to Field, the experience was “extremely unpleasant and potentially life-changing.” However, despite its hideous nature, he expressed gratitude towards the doctor for his “kindness” and “courage,” implying that the doctor’s actions could have led to disciplinary action if they had been exposed.

Following my clandestine abortion, I threw myself into auditions, and to my delight, secured the legendary role of Gidget before the year’s end, all as a humble fan.

She underscored the difficulties women encounter nowadays, based on her personal experiences, since the Roe v. Wade decision was reversed in 2022.

Field expressed that numerous women from her generation experienced comparable painful experiences, and she finds strength in this thought. She believes, just as I do, that they desire to champion their grandchildren and every young woman in this nation.

Here’s one way of paraphrasing the given text in natural and easy-to-read language:

Field ended her caption by encouraging others to share their stories.
